Obviously I have too much time on my hands -
But I have pondered this one on & off for a few years. Why did Ford switch over to the larger diameter distributor shaft in the mid-70s? Is there some design feature in the Duraspark ignition that overwhelmed the .467" shaft, or was it just a convenient opportunity to implement a change that the engineering dept already had in the pipeline? & either way, does that mean that if an early distributor was fitted w/a steel gear, it would still be prone to fail when used w/a billet cam?
& since I've started this, does anyone know if the internal dimensions of the FOMOCO distributor housing was changed? Since the shaft is bushed, it seems that Ford would have just set new specs for the bushing i.d., rather than overbore the castings AND change the bushing. But I ain't Ford, neither...
Anyone know of a distributor shop that could build a custom dizzy - an early housing w/small top, but w/a later .531" shaft & steel gear? I figure probably a Petronix unit to get rid of the points, but it would look 60s vintage & be compatible w/5.0 innards. Anyone? Buehler?
Much obliged,
Matt
