Hi Guys

Just picked up a early 60's 260 complete. I am putting this in my 64 falcon. I want to hot rod this motor up and get some good hp, maybe up to 300?.
WHat would I need to do to do that? Seeing as it is a compete rebuild anyway, should I have it bored up to a 302?

Any tips are much appreciated .
I like the idea of a 260 because thats what would have been in this car. Plus I got it wicked cheap.

thanks

Pat

Early 260 engines used a five bolt, (I think) bell housing. Where the later engines used 6. If you have the early type bellhousing, you're good to go. The early bells are getting pretty rare, and no one that I'm aware of makes an adaptor.

I don't think a 260 can be bored to 4", but I may be wrong. Or was that the 255 engine? My memory is failing....

Nope,

You are correct, J. A 260 can't even make a 289. Pat, due to parts availability (or more correctly, the lack of...), you would have a terrible time trying to make a real performer out of your 260. If you are bound & determined to use it, there ARE a few 5-bolt bellhousings on Ebay from time to time. In fact, I think there is a vintage cast 5-bolt scattershield up for grabs right now. But you'll end up w/a "vintage" engine, not a performance engine. Grab yourself a copy of Tom Monroe's "How To Rebuild Your Small Block Ford" - it's one of the HP series. It is a good reference piece, & it goes into quite a bit of detail on interchangeability of parts.

Best of luck,
Matt

Ouch,

You keep making it tougher, Pat! I don't drive autos, & I don't work on them, but I'm going to hazard a guess that 5-bolt automatic bellhousings (I "believe" the pre-C4 models had a separate bell?) are even harder to find than one for a stick. Buehler?

Best,
Matt

yeah I was on the falcon forum earlier, they said all early c-4's had a removeable bell that I could put a 5 bolt bell on it.
Yeah, I never go the easy route

thanks
