390 question

I found locally a '67 390 2v that was in a truck. The price is reasonable ($200) so I wanted to see if the truck engine is usable? In the rebuild I'm going to use the cast heads (rebuilt, ported and polished). I'm going to run a blue thunder dual quad intake with a better cam and probably flat top pistons. After doing a quick search it seems that some of the heads used on the trucks had different mounting holes for the exhaust manifold.

So can it be used? Is it worth it?

Talking 390 truck heads

Should have four holes for exhaust mounting, two vertical at 12 and 6 o'clock, another two for "staggered" mounting at 2 and 8 o'clock. Heads are good but are restrictive compared to 390 4V heads. 428 heads will bolt right on (as will 427 heads: read $$$$$).

390's were FORD's "workhorse" engine for many years and are pretty robust as far as HP mods go. I personally had one built out to 615 HP back in the late 60", early 70's . . . 427 medium riser heads, stock stroke, stock bore, 12:1 compression, Holman-Moody custom cam and their years of stock car expertise'.

Great engine to play with . . . Monster torque.

HTH

390's didn't go into ford trucks til 68.
If is actually 67, it will be a 352. Not that its bad but really all you'd want to use would be the block.

Smile 390 truck motor

I have a pair of 428 iron heads that I would sell and I have a new in the box old stock .020 over 390 truck pistons. I want $80 for the pistons plus a little for shipping.
If you have a 352 / 360 truck block and need a 390 crank I can help.
email me for pictures

I have five or six 352 / 390 truck motors in my shop plus a couple of 390 cranks. All for sale.

the 352 & 360 truck crank has a 3.5" stroke
the 390 truck crank is 3.78"

I may be wrong, but I think the 390 truck pistons have a unique pin placement that results in a very low compression ratio when used with a standard 390 crank and rods. I think these are basically the same pistons I removed from my 410FE. It was a 390 block with a 428 crank and rods which proved to be a good combination.

correct. 390 truck pistons (AKA 381P shown above) have a 1.660 in. pin height vs the std 390 which is 1.776 in.
As said they were also used to make the Merc 410 which was a 390 bore with 428 crank.
And yes, great combination..
This was a .040 over 390 with 428 crank which is 418cu.in. Stock iron heads

Weren't the truck 390's really 391's? I think they had a great forged crank that was bullet proof but needed some minor machining on the front snout for a passanger car dampner and pulley.

Well I was going to go back and check the stroke but with so many variables about whether or not the truck and car engines are the same I'm going to wait on one more definite. Thanks for all of your input.

The 391 was only in big trucks like the f600-f700's
Otherwise truck and car where the same with the exception of pin height on the pistons.
If its in a pick up and a FE, its usable.
