Icon21 any fe install tricks?

so i got my motor mount issue solved, try to install the transmission there does not seem to be any way to get the tranny in once the engine is already in place. has any one ever pulled a tremec transmission on a mkIII with a ford fe on a finished car looking for any tricks, if not looks like i will have to pull the engine back out.

the reason i installed it with out the tranny i figured it would be easier to handle because i was by myself.

I installed mine with Tranny on back of engine and it was easy.

Even if its possible to install the tranny, I would suggest its easier to pull the engine at this stage.

Installed engine/tranny together, wouldn't even consider anything else.

what did you guys use to install the engine and tranny together?, i am using a engine lift platethat mounts to the carb flange,if you used this which hole did you use?.
when you installed it did you have a helper it seems like a lot of wait to muscle around.

i forgot to ask my engine hoist has extendable legs but it seems to hit the jackstands, i just made some 5 inch wood structures so i can place them under the front tires so i have enough room for the engine hoist to slide under the frame. what did you use when you installed your engines?.

Wrench,

It is easier to do as one assembly, but also easy to do separately if you have a lift and tranny jack. I have done both. If you do them together an engine leveler helps a lot. If you do them separately you can remove the the tranny bracket and install the tranny tailshaft up first. It goes up easily then. After 3 times now I am getting good at it.

Wrench,

Attached are some photos for the install. It was definitely a 3 person event. I thought it could be done with 2, but one person is managing the transmission, the other is pushing the engine into the engine bay, while the other is managing the jack, moving it forward, lowering the engine etc. I bought additional chain to increase the length and hooked it in the front most hole. Once the transmission was in the tunnel, I need a jack to lift it. You will need to move the jack stands to sit underneath the tube that runs from left to right rather than the tubes that run along the length of the car. The pictures mostly show my wife and neighbor installing the engine. I'm the one moving the jack around.

this is the problem my car has the body on, last night i made some wood structures that i can place under the front tires. i thought about it last night that i could put the stands under the front left to right 4 inch tube.

i still would like to just lift the engine and pull it back and try to get the tranny in, i get nervous hanging all that weight over a finished body, i remember when i installed my 342 with the tranny attached with the body off it was difficult because you have to get it so high and tranny angled down because of the position of the x brace and i was by myself.

A load leveler helps a lot if you do it all together.

Using an engine leveler you can do it by yourself and it is relatively easy, just takes some time. Don't even try to do it by yourself without one.

Here's my wife installing the 427w in my cobra:

I tried again this morning there is no way to get the tranny far enough back the shifter gets in the way. I will have to remove the engine and install the tranny.
The next qustion the cylinder heads only have bolt holes on the drivers side front and the passenger side rear can i still use the leveler with only 2 pick up points?.

also has any one used the harbor freight load leveler?, they are only 40.00, i hate renting it always seems something breaks then you own it. who else sells a cheap load leveler?

The short answer is no but you can still use 4 mount points.

On the passenger side front, use one of the alternator mounting holes. On the driver's rear, remove the bolt at the 10 oclock position that holds the bell housing in place. You can easily reinstall the one bellhousing bolt you removed when you're done.

Here you can see where we used the alternator bolt:

Exactly what Bruce said on the bolts and I used the Harbor freight leveler with no problems. I did need longer chains though.

I will pick up a load leveler and give it a try, it is a shame because the engine is sitting in the car here is a pic.

Wrench,

Is that a full length oil filter or a short one?

ok i picked up a harbor freight 2 ton load leveler, it is raining today so i cant try to install the engine the garage is not long enough so car has to be 3/4 out side, no room to do from side. i already see a problem with the body on you loose a lot of room if you pick up the engine from the rear of the cyl head and bellhousing the chains will hit the body?

i noticed all the pics you guys had the body off, except for mark reid but he has a small block. if i would of known this was such a headache i would of kept my 342.

Check out this thread where Kirkham installs an FE with the body on it. It is a long thread, but it's there with a picture showing how it can be done.

i think one thing that would of helped would of been to use the short input shaft and the 6057 bellhousing, this would of given a little room to possibly install the tranny afterwards.
i read the kirkham article, they did not have the tranny tunnel in so that made it a lot easier, it was wierd how they hooked up the engine from the side .

i will give it another try with the load leveler once the wheather clears up.

ok i got the engine in with transmission, this was not fun at all by yourself. i was correct about the load leveler the chains would of hit the body near the windshield, i was lucky enough to have the oil pan rest on the x brace so i could take the tension off the load leveler and pick it up from the engine plate that bolts to the carb. i was nervous with all that wait hanging over my black paint job. i did notice i have to trim off a little where the shifter hole is when i put it in first it just hits the aluminum, and the tranny mount only lines up with the middle hole so i will have to enlarge the left and right hole for the mount to bolt up. now i hope the headers fit in the cut outs.

Don't worry to much on the exhaust, you may have to enlarge the anyways because the fe will build alot more heat and start to blister the paint, ask me how i know

when i ran my 342 i had ffr cats, then i ran the j pipes so you had alot of adjustment.
i tried a set of 4x4's and they did not even come close to the openings i had to heat them up and tweek them to fit the openings, i had bought them at the ffr open house they were cheap because they had marks in them from the bends so i did nt care to much.

so now i have to add a relay for the fuel pump termintate the wires for the msd , shorten the wires to the starter, figure out how to hook up the carb throttle cable, and plumb in the new fuel pressure regulator (return style) and make up some new fuel lines in the engine compartment.

Wrench,

Glad to see you got it done. I also enlarged the cut outs at the rear of the opening because of heat. How did the clutch linkage work out?

How much gap did you leave between the exhaust and the body? Can you post pics?
