4.6 and an automatic transmission?

I know it’s blasphemous here, but is anyone out there using an automatic behind their mod motor? I picked up an engine from a 96 Mark VIII and the guy threw in the 4R70W transmission. I had planned on going with a T-45 again on this build, but I thought maybe I’d give the auto a shot since I have it now. I drive in bumper to bumper traffic most days on the way to and from work and the clutch really becomes a pain after a while. Besides, if I don't like it I can just drop in a manual transmission later, right?

Kevin,

Some builders have used automatic transmissions in their builds. I know of a doctor from Palm Springs that built one with an auto because he had to because of health reasons. I tried to find some links to past topics on the subject but I have run out of time. Do some searches and you should find some info on it. Have fun and don’t be afraid to build the car the way you want. That’s the only way you will be happy with the end result.

There are builders that have used a MK VIII engine and have swapped the auto for a manual so it can be done. Again try some searches to see what is involved in the conversion. Do your research up front and the build will go much smoother.

Nothing wrong with an auto, Shelby had one in his. I have one in mine and love it. I don't have a mod motor though. Cheers.

Build the car the way you want it...
There is a forum member that has a 4.6 with an automatic trany, his name is Craig and his screen name is abdw-wcw. Also I believe he live in the same State as you!
He is a really nice guy and sure will chime if he notices this thread.
Otherwise, look up his posts or you can always PM him.

As for doing a swap after, I don't think you can "drop" one in just like that. I don't think the software in the PCM is the same, but surely doable with challanges
For a decision like that, I suggest you choose the trany you really want and build the car that way.

i have an auto in mine.
i have wide feet and bad coordination.
you will have to relocate the emergency brake handle, and do some trimming on some tabs on the top.
i also added some shim under the rear mount because the pan will hang below the frame.
then shifter location is fun.
almost a year on the road and i love it.
