Question

Anyone using one of the stand alone systems, like the MOTEC or FAST systems?

I am thinking of ditching the factory wiring all together.

I ditched all the factory wiring, but stuck with the Ford ECU. The chassis harness is from Ron Francis. My engine setup came from http://www.thedetailzone.com/

Cheers, John

I have no experience but this supporting vendor seem very knowable about our cars and the DOHC engines.

Like Dukegrad I went with the Ron Francis and The Detail Zone's harness. If I did it over again, without going the diet route, I'd probably try another option on the accessory wiring. Probably the I Squared route, but I'd stick with the DZ guys for the engine, etc.
The setup is pretty straightforward and I had my engine up and running the same day I started. The support is second to none. I had a couple of small hiccups in getting the proper gauge wiring, but Scott took the time and walked through it. Top notch service and very knowledgable.
For a novice like me this was great to have.

Thanks for the input Starboy.

TD - I looked through I-Squared Engineering's site and I do not see any harnesses that are for the 4.6L DOHC. Did I miss something?

I just PM'd the guys at I-Squared Engineering.
I'm sure Chris will get back to us. I hope I didn't misinform anyone.

D.Boone,

We do have a harness for a 5.0 app, but all the harness we do for you guys (4.6) are based on a diet from the donor. Our diet price is $500.00 and then you select what type of ECU re-program you would like; a hand-held tuner or just a chip... The Detail Zone is the only source we know of for an alternative to the diet. They do a very nice job on their products...

Thanks,

Chris

Thanks Chris, that is what I thought from looking through your products.

I may yet decide on the diet route, but am still exploring my options.

For anyone else interested in this, I got some responses over at Corral.net on systems.

The list is actually bigger than I thought.

MOTEC - M48
Electromotive - TEC 3
Big Stuff 3 - Gen 3 SEFI
DTA FAST - P8pro
SDS - (I need to check out)
Accel - Gen 7 (this is no longer available)
MegaSquirt - ?

Now I need to do some homework and find out the availability and cost of these systems. In my first look, one of these was available as a "kit" that you build! (I don't remember which one though.)

MegaSquirt is the kit, or it is available assembled. I always thought it would be an interesting thing to play with, but not on my own car! I'm not nearly that good. All the code for it is open-source, I believe.

Cheers, John

I did some investigation on the Megasquirt.

Very economical, about $500 complete assembled, but right now it does not do sequential injection, only bank or batch, via 2 injector controllers. A sequential injector/COP controller is in developement for release sometime in 2007.

While I am not afraid of the electronics or even programming/tuning, I do not want to get tied down in that right now.

I am looking at theDetailzone harness now, just twice the $$ of the Megasquirt!

TD, yes I saw that.

As you see in my first post, I want to get away from using donor harnesses.
