I have read all the posts regarding the challenge of your stepdaughter. My sympathy, along with many others, was with you as we followed along.

Frankly, your sharing was very instructive, it helped shape my, and many others thinking on what to do should we find ourselves in a similar circumstance.

So, for completeness, you committed at least 1,449 days to this problem set. Neither you nor your wife / the rest of the family deserved being placed in this vise. We are thrilled at the outcome.

Take care.

Allen

Congrats on this episode being closed with a positive...or at least not negative...outcome. I fear the story is not over though, so stay vigilant.

Glad to hear things are moving in a positive direction. Don't retreat though, your wife and you need to hold your ground. It would be a mistake to think that you've put all this behind you and this step-daughter can now reunite with her family. You'll find yourself wondering "how in the hell did she wind up back under my roof?!?".

It will be hard, to be ruthless. Your sanity however requires it. You've won a battle, the war might not be over.

Happy for you...

It's not over yet, so do not have too short a memory until she has been "straight" for a couple years.

You've helped her with this move.

UPDATE

We put the house up on the market, sold it and closed on it a couple of weeks ago. My stepdaughter wants nothing to do with us or her two sisters. Not sure where she is living. She did call my wife to basically tell her she has no desire for a relationship. I can live with this. Maybe some day she will take ownership of her actions but I doubt it. Its always easier to blame someone else. I'm glad this chapter of our lives is over.
ROB J and 7tvette thanked this.

If you don't think it's real, go ahead and step in front of it!

This is a rare situation is when bad news is good news. This whole think sucked, but you have clearly done all you could, and you should be highly respected as a good example of a family leader and good citizen.

I agree with the others comments. It's sad that she is going that route but I am very glad that you will be able to move forward and leave this chapter in your life behind.

Now, hold her to it until she straightens her life out. She will likely come around someday.
