Kathy and I are looking at beds. Ours is over 10 years old now. One of those things you sort of forget about until your back starts to hurt and you notice the big impressions on the mattress from age...or weight?
So we went to look at all the new fangled beds. I think we saw about 100 different styles and firmness of foam ones. Gel ones, pillow top ones, tungsten barrilium springed ones, variable rate springed ones, foam coil ones, moveable ergo ones. Double box spring single mattress and double box spring double mattress ones....and on and on. Jumping Jesus how the heck are you supposed to decide on anything in a bed anymore without sleeping in the store for a complete day. They suggest 10 minutes on each one to allow the foam to conform to your body, then to move the feet up and down then your head up and down etc. We were there for several hours and never bought anything.....we did like the new Sealy Opit-cool mattress as it was really much cooler after laying on it for ten minutes. Oh and BTW with the adjustable box spring mechanism and a King Size it was only $7,000.00. Yeah not bad right? They actually have a little flap that covers the price sheet and then they stick one of the foam displays on top of it so you don;t look at the price first and keep walking by. Seven grand for a bed......

They are expensive but I don't remember paying anywhere near that price. Ours is a Sealy pillowtop King size and we bought it about 5 years ago. But, everynight when we go to sleep, we just love that bed.
These prices almost want to make you think about installing some airbags in the springs of your existing mattress.
If you find one you like in store, it'll be worth going home to sleep on the idea and look it up online. My wife and I saved 20% on a nice tempurpedic doing that and had it delivered within a week. The local store wouldn't budge on their price because it was 'regulated'. Too bad for them.

Wifey and I bought a select comfort air bed on CL for $650! Love that thing, but never would have paid full price. Costco is a great deal for conventional beds.
Look around the net for as much info as you can find. Sites such as Sleeplikthedead.com are a great start. Sleepys sucks.com is helpful finding out what they and other mattress stores won't do for you. We bought from Sleepys last year and are having a hard time with their so called warrenty. It's bull$hit. I imagine the markup is so high on mattreses so they can eat half of them. More money in no way means a better product.

Craig is a stand up guy. I actually went into the city to his show room and met the guy.
I will say this, don't just order online. Find the bed you want, hopefully it will be one he sells and then call and ask them for their best deal. A lot of these guys cannot advertise the price they will sell a bed for.

Joe R. has a point. My wife and I recently bought a new sealy memory foam mattress (and motorized/tilt/massaging base- total cost right at $2k cash as I had a local connection & got a good price),,,,,
While we both love how comfortable it is to sleep on,,,,,,,
it does not "bounce" like a conventional mattress,,,,, and
it takes a little adjustment and creativity to find a comfy way to "get your freak on".

consumer alert: I will never do business with esurance. Just google "esurance complaints", for a few examples why.
I will say it if no one else will, you may want to rethink a memory foam mattress if you are still romantically involved. They don't work right.
This.
That being said, memory foam is still awesome in many ways and despite the above draw back I would still get one.
I fall asleep on my side but if I fall asleep on my side and get dead arms and end up waking up constantly throughout the night to turn.
Went to Mattress Store and went through several mattresses with the guy (probably about 15-20) from different manufacturers and got me spot on as to my sleeping habits and pointed out a specific mattress that he was willing to place money on that I would find the most comfortable.
He was spot on so whilst it was expensive ($2.2k) it was totally worth it, you can find loads cheaper but for me, when a product does EXACTLY what it says on the tin, I'm prepared to pay the extra.

What is your suggestion when it comes to purchase time? It's about time to replace ours and we're starting the looking phase.

I don't remember what we paid, I'm sure it was over 3k ten years ago. BUT we have a pillow top Select Comfort sleep number in king and has held up very well, plus it's the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on.
I bought the Serta IComfort because it was not hot like the Temperpedic. It has gel in it which does not get hot. We kept our box springs and bought the mattress (king) for around $2,000.
10 year warranty.....love it!!
10 year? I think it is a 25 year warranty? At least that is what we were told.
BTW That is the one (icomfort) we are leaning towards as well. I did notice a difference laying on that one in the heat/cool. I like to, or I should say I sleep better in a cold room, so I want a cool mattress. My biggest problem is still trying to figure out what setting, ie. soft, firm, extra firm to go with.....

You can get a name brand pillow top at Sams or Costco for a pretty good price.

Same here. Not to mention my wife likes to sleep on a super soft bed and I could easily sleep on my garage floor if I could. She can set hers to fluffy and mine is at 100 and we are both happy and sleep great. Before we had a medium matress to try and meet in the middle, it did not work out well since neither one of us could get a good nights sleep. I hated the price when we bought it but it has been well worth it after the first few days of good sleep.
Don't forget to find the correct pillow also.

Had an interesting idea. The wife and I recently stayed at a hotel that advertised the bedding they used and also offered it to us for sale when we checked out. This has led me to the idea that there should be a "hotel showroom" for beds and linenes and such. Basically it would work well because the bedding companies would pay to advertise at the hotel and also provide product, then the hotel would list the available products, and when you checked in or made your reservations, you could specify what bedding you wanted from a list. This would work for EVERYONE in that the bed manufacturers would get some real world testing of their products in "head to head" type of settings, the hotel would likely see increased stays, and the customer would actually get to try it out over a day or so to make sure they like what they have chosen. Works for everybody, so why aren't there such things? Or maybe there are and I just don't know about them? I know I would certainly feel much better about plunking down thousands of $$ if I had actually gotten to take the item for a "test drive".
Once the word "hotel" popped up, I had to jump in.
We like a VERY firm mattress. And we found a set. Basically one with no pillow on top. Yet still had nice quilted ticking. Like sleeping on a luxurious boxspring. Very easy to turn over on. Its called "contract bedding". They make it for hotels and such.
Our local manufacturer (Springwall) had a salesman and put us in line for the next production run. King size with 2 twin boxsprings ran us $750 in 2007. Been great ever since. We flip every 6 months. It'll be ready for replacement after 7-8 years. Most every bed needs replaced after 7-8 years anyway. I personally would like a constant flow of new bedding under me anyway than force myself to get 25 years out of a mattress cause a warranty.
To each his own. I just think bedding should be new and flat and firm.

WOW, A bunch of "old fart" car guys talking about beds and bedding. Mike is right the correct pillow does make a big difference, so do the correct sheets. I will not sleep on anything less than 800 thread count. We have two sets of what my wife calls the "lucky" sheets 1200tc Egyptian Cotton. Also Cobra Corry living in the "BOONNIES" and sleeping in a "cold room" I'm sure you know all about a good goose down (not feather) comforter. Since we sleep with a window open all year, winter and summer we have three comforters of different weights. Just switched to the "fall&spring" last week.

I have found that the Egyptian Cotton sheets help with the Tempurpedic hotness issue too. The memory foam used to get very hot while sleeping on it. With the nice cotton sheets, I sleep very comfortable now.

One more thing about sheets, we stopped buying sheets with ANY pattern on them. About twenty five years ago my wife woke me at 0:200 'cause the flowers were upside down and SHE could not sleep like that!! Now solid colours only!!
