Rich, respectfully, you might want to do some more research. The 818 is a completely new design, wider than the S2000 with a full space frame and TONS more cockpit room. I can't even sit in a S2000. The 818 is only 1800 lbs and mid engined with close to 300hp before hop-ups.
I understand the 818 is a completely new design,
but just like the FF Type 65 Coupe is a completely new design, "wider than the" original Daytona and has "TONS more cockpit room" than the original Daytona,
the type 65 is still a replica of the Cobra Daytona Coupe because of its looks.
And since the 818 looks like an S2000 that is were the replica statement comes from.
Engine peformance is only limited by how much money you are willing to spend.
Except it's mid-engine, uses a turbo, is a horizontally-opposed 4-cylinder, has to be put together before it can be driven, sound completely different, and weighs less. Otherwise, yeah, I suppose one could mistake it for an S2000, or a Miata, or a Saturn Sky, or a Pontiac Solstice, or .... (if you can't tell, there's just a wee bit of sarcasm here, I completely disagree, not a replica of an S2000.)
Looks like a great track car, with plenty of potential.
But, how is it as a street car? What comfort levels does it have? Why would any one want to built this for the street if there are alternatives with all the goodies? Top, (fixed, removable hardtop of fold-able cloth?) windows?
I get having a Cobra replica as a street car. But why one of these?
Don't get me wrong, I like it and the above are legitimate questions and not bashings.

Rallygorgo,
There is no advantages of the mid-engine when the S2000 has a near 50/50 weight distribution, a turbo can be add, has a I4 that can rev to 8k, fit and finish 100% better, sounds completely different and if you want a tin can you can remove the plush stuff to equal the weight of a 818.
JMO
If the S2000 was so great, why is it out of production? I'm not knocking the S2000, I'm a Honda guy and would love to have one.
This car isn't for everyone. Much like the '33, it's a way for FFR to branch out away from the Cobra culture and get an entirely new group of customers. The car they chose for a donor is available around the world making their target audience everywhere. From a business point of view I think it was brilliant. Subarus are plentiful, good quality, and easy to work with (except for the wire harness). I think FFR's challenge will be launching it and keeping up the quality and responsiveness to the new customers while still fully supporting their current customer base. I really hope they succeed! America needs more successes like them!
1987 Buick Grand National (All original with only 16k miles)
1965 Buick Riviera Gran Sport (Currently undergoing a frame off restoration)
1965 Buick Riviera 401 car, unrestored survivor, driver.
2005 F150 FX4, Supercrew (Daily Driver)
2001 Dodge Grand Caravan (Beater)
This car is a way for factory five to attempt to capture the dreams of the next generation. Will everyone like it, no chance.
I don't like the GTM, when I bought my cobra kit my wife wanted me to do a 33 instead. Go figure.
Will guys/gals that spent their youth watching fast and the furious movies and tuning Hondas like these as they grow up and score good jobs? Some will. Others will turn to classics, others modern sports cars.
Kids these days have little attachment to the cobra, to them a cobra is a mustang. A 33 is a fossil and the GTM is still highly priced to jump into.
I like the car, it would need a roof to get me in it as I've already got a cobra.
As far as it looking like some other model goes, it simply isn't a Honda.
It is a home built road jet, the people that buy these have moved on passed the civic.
I wish the car was a little more aggressive looking (larger fender bulges, bigger extraction vents etc). i know based on the very stiff tube frame, an turbo engine potential easily north of 500whp, weight under 2000 lbs, and mid engine balance, this car is going to do some serious damage on the track.
I want one, but I have too much money and time getting this cobra to be one of the fastest cars on the track. I think the road would be much easier with this car.
The comparison to the S2000 is ridiculous. That is a mid pack production car on the track and has average handling and no torque. I guess the lights look similar

I thought it was going to have a top? A removable top? Soft top?
Once again if not, it is not a New England car like I was hoping for.
could be an economy car or a HP car depending on how you build it so that is good at least.
I hope it has a better streetable suspension. Not like a brick.

I like the design very much. I'm not seeing the comparison to the S2000 at all. If I had more time and more space in the garage, I would buy it in a heart-beat. I think it will be a huge seller for FFR... As has been said above, it reaches an entirely new demographic. Can't wait to see the street version and what customers do with their builds. Tons of potential here for modifications large and small.

My recollection is that a hard top will be available for the 818. It will also be available with a full windshield.
I personally am hoping that it will be practical for a daily driver. The picture shows it with a full roll cage, but is this just track configuration, or the only configuration?
Mark Smith has made a point of emphasizing that the car can be finished quite inexpensively, making it clear that it will be available in gel coat colors so a paint job is not needed. But do you think the multicolor paint job shown in the pic is gel coat or paint?

The picture I posted are from the 818R this is why it has full roll cage and nô windsheild. At Sema they Will also unveil the 818S. The blue car is painted the final version should be Made from paintless panels (not to sûre how this will look). The prototype for sema are both Made out like our cobra (fiberglass panels but nô seams)
We should be able to see the street version soon, it Will be offer with à Soft top as per DS.

Are those Honda S2000 headlights or 2005 Camry Headlights???
Car looks Fugly to me. Sorry, wish I could be more positive.
I've been considering a mid-engine Subaru exo-car build...but was holding off for the 818 reveal (hoping that it would be a wild enough design, despite having doors, windows, etc...)
But it's clear to me that FFR totally dropped the ball on this styling-wise. Probably the end result of trying to combine elements of the Top 5 voted designs = mediocrity. Hate to say it; but the use of Camry headlights is unfortunately VERY appropriate...

You are in a VERY small minority on this......Steven

Is it just me or is there getting to be more and more negativity on this website lately? I understand everyone has an opinion and is welcome to it and free to express it, but it's disappointing when this site is being infected. I expect trash talking on most forums but we need to hold a higher standard. We are all on this forum because we are building our dream and its a little more personal. Maybe it's from being in the industry and not wanting to offend customers, but I think when someone posts a pic of their car or modification they've made, etc.. that telling them it's stupid or fugly or their car will be worth less or whatever is the equivalent to calling their wife ugly. I think we need to remeber the intention here is to learn and encourage. And I certainly expect more from our moderators. Just my .02, sorry if your toes got crunched.
I'm not a big fan of the R version but I have never been a fan of any of the track only type cars.
I'm really excited to see the street version though. I've been watching since they did the design contest and the street version is the one I would have chosen for #1.
SeanHM,
Keep in mind the target audience for these cars is younger. Also there is an entirely new group of competitor for the 818. I doubt the likes of superformance or kirkham cares much about it but the 818 is bound to ruffle feathers somewhere.
Posting negative comments on the Internet hoping to cause an argument is referred to as trolling. You have to let this stuff roll off the old back.
Besides, everyone I entitled to an opinion, some are bound to be negative.
