From Discover Magazine:
For male black widow spiders, standing at just a quarter of the size of their mates, sex involves a very real danger: females of the species have no qualms about turning cannibalistic if they’re hungry after getting down and dirty. But it seems that it’s more than just a game of chance for horny male spiders. Researchers at Arizona State University have now learned that simply walking on the webs of female spiders can provide males with chemical cues telling them if their potential mates are ravenous enough to eat them.

I once dated a chick like that.

Be careful now. If you've got a male there are bound to be females which are bad. Very, very bad.......

I don't think so. I've seen plenty of dead males, and they don't resemble this in the least. We have TONS of black widows here. I could probably go out on my property right now and find a half dozen of them in short order. The males are very small and usually just look brown in color. The females, on the other hand, are black or brown and have a perfect "hourglass" or what resembles a figure 8 made out of two triangles.

ALL spiders are poisonous, just a matter of whether the poison is reactive to humans or not, and/or if there is sufficient amounts. At least that's what I was told by a spider "expert" at one of my kids' birthday parties that brougt a tarantula along for the kids to examine and handle. She also said that, generally speaking, the more dangerous the spider looks, it probably is. I wouldn't mess with that one unless it was with the bottom of my shoe!

I googled male black widow and came up with pics that match the creepy little dude. It says that the venom sac in males doesen't work once the spider matures. Who cares... he still gets smashed...

The juvi females and males look almost identical. This one was about 2/3 size of any females I've seen so who knows if it was male or female.
