F1 on NBC in 2013

From 2013 for 4 years the F1 coverage in the US will move to NBC and NBC Sports from Speed TV. Just another nail in the coffin of what was Speedvision..... NBC secures F1 broadcast rights in the United States - F1 news - AUTOSPORT.com I just hope that they can get some decent commentators on board.

If smart they will keep the same commentators and format, both are important to its success. When a couple of races were on Fox this year, it was the same commentators, but the format condensed. There was no pre race or post race. Right now, Speed treats the races as an event with all coverage and I enjoy that. I hope NBC is not going to treat it as just another race in a time slot, with tape delay to the 3:30 slot. Did NBC just go after these rights because of the Austin and NJ GPs?

I would like to see the same commentators and format except for Sam Posey. I was on a Formula 5000 race team back in the 60’s that raced against Sam. He had the desire to be a race driver and his grandmother’s money to pay for his cars but I don’t think he had the talent for it. He wasn’t fast and if memory serves my correctly he broke or crashed more than he finished and that would be towards the end of the field. Now he makes pieces on some obscure, nebulas, medaphical, mumbo jumbo, idea instead of the real business at hand. I could be wrong but that is my opinion.

There are rumors and indications that Fox is looking to turn Speed into an all-sports network anyways. They've already done a tiny bit of this by televising soccer and UFC (annoying lots of people on this board )

I'd like them to keep the current trio, especially Bob Varsha and Steve Matchett. And I REALLY hope they keep showing qualifying. Qualifying is half the race. Don't care much about pre-race show, nor post-race wrap up and press conference.

Back in the Day

Back in the Day when F1 was on ESPN they used to start the broadcast live as the car were rolling out on the warm-up lap. Announce the grid in the 3 minutes before the start. It was tight and focused on the race not all of the other stuff that surrounds its.

Couldn't agree more about Sam Posey. Same with Paul Page on the NHRA coverage which I rarely watch anymore because of him. I actually quite like Lee Diffey too on the occasions that he has filled in for Varsha.

I ALWAYS mute the sound when I watch the beginning of an F1 race so I don't have to listen to Posey's overly-dramatic intro.

But Varsha, Matchett and Hobbs? They're great.
