OK so I got my window trim painted finally. It was stained. Now the rest of the trim either needs to be painted or changed to a pre-painted trim.
The question is....The rest of the house has all stained trim. Everywhere. Is it kosher to paint the trim in one room, or another, and still have stained trim in other areas/rooms of the house? Or, should I now go, and paint ALL of the house trim?
I just think it is strange to look through a stained, open door, to see painted trim and doors in the room beyond. Just me?
I am planning on painting the whole house insides this Winter, so should I just paint all the trim then?
I have been watching a lot of the home improvement shows on TV and just don;t see houses with one room painted and another stained that's all. Got me thinking......

many homes have a combination of paint and stain packages.
sometimes with the two together it will show more depth to the wall lines and rooms. kind of like an accent wall.

I have a combination of both and almost every home we looked at 2 years ago before moving had both. I personally like the contrast that BigLeo mentioned, having a nice stained molding going into and in an office looks good.

You do realize that you are asking a bunch of car guys an interior design question?!?
I think there should be consistency on stuff like this but my wife disagrees.

Another Finish carpenter chiming in. We do split finish on doors/jambs all the time. Door painted one side, stained the other. Stain stops @ the stop. ( hehe, I made a pun.)

Now I want to put in 6 panel doors. with nicer hardware. I have the cheapo slab side luan doors, with the cheapo door knobs right now. Can't stand them. Pine doors are running upwards of $160-$180 for the doors. Can I get the molded doors and still stain them? They say you can stain them like wood, but I find it hard to believe they will come out looking right. I have never stained a molded door, so at least they are only around $68.00 for a framed door. So if I mess one up, no big deal I guess.

i suppose you are talking about the masonite doors, i have seen them grained which is a paint and a glaze. you put the base paint on and then the glaze coat, the masonite doors come with a pressed grain in them so the graining is done already by wiping the glaze lightly. if you take a trim sample to a good paint store they can match a base and glaze or i am sure they come pre-finished too if ordered.
some raw pine doors at the big box stores are going more into the yellow pine, than the white pine, so the grain is more wilder and can stain out different because of the winter grain and summer growth grain, so watch the doors if they are paired together (double door opening) sometimes a conditioner can be put on to keep the stain uniform.
i prefer to get any raw doors from a lumber/millwork supplier, the bigbox stores are getting alot of their lumber/trim/doors from out of country, the one thing that pisses me off is the damn stickers they put on with the bar-codes sh!t takes longer to take off that to install it.
look into some fir doors they stain up sweet, if you are looking softwood doors.
good luck
