Harrasing people who drive vehicles that get worse fuel mileage than their own is pretentious and disgusting. He needed the $#!^ scared out of him. BUT....
I believe increasing CAFE standards is long overdue and needed. We have technolodgy now that can siginificantly reduce emissions without sacrifising power, drivablity or other independence we enjoy. Just look at the direct injection turbo options available from Ford, BMW, Hyundai and others. Take it a step further and look at what Europe has done with diesels. I rented a BMW 3 series diesel in Germany this spring (320d). I took the car to a GPS verified speed of 141mph, averaged 100-110 mph on the unlimited portions of the autobahn, and still got just over 39mpg. The prius rental car my company has does a real world 37-38mpg at 75-80mph highway speeds and is absolutely DREADFUL to drive.
Anyway, we can find solutions to climate change and enviromental concerns without making the kind of sacrifises that result in driving a car like the smart. So lets figure it out, one step at a time.
I personally call them the Toyota 'Pritentious' and OMG HOW TINY DOES THAT GT40 LOOK?!
It looks like a toy almost!
It was tiny and tight. Strange to look up at motorcyclists while I was at a red light

I get that in my '99 Miata
I personally feel that if you buy a Prius or anything else in a similar vein then you are MORALLY OBLIGATED to drive it EVERYWHERE in it's most economical way ALL. THE. TIME.
So when one Prius passed me on the motorway doing about 95mph I feel he thoroughly missed the point.
Prius owners don't buy them for the environment. They buy them to make a political statement. It's basically the same thing as putting a bumper sticker on your car saying "I am a moron" so be thankful there is a way to identify these people.

If I'm asked, my daily driver is a 4WD Escape hybrid Limited. I love the thing, it gets 30 MPG, is a tank in the snow, and is comfortable as heck. I figure, the carbon I save during the week offsets what I make with the BB on the weekend.

Let me make it clear... "clean" cars are fine if thats what you are into, but the prius is not what that car is all about. , no working blinkers and for some odd reason can only be driven in the fast lane at 45mph.
You want green, buy a volt or even better yet TESLA.
Odd, a quick search, i guess we are not alone!!! LOL

Reason: Removed political comment
If that water buffalo would eat a little fewer oreos and little debbies, the planet would be "greener",
since the delivery trucks wouldn't have to replenish the grocery store as often.
