My Alaska adventure....

I had asked for advice on a trip to Alaska quite some time ago. Well, we went. It was awesome. Recommend anyone who enjoys the outdoors to go there if you have the means.

First Stop: Denali National Park

Cool, foggy morning in Denali. Fire weed was in full bloom

First wild Grizzly I’ve ever seen

85 miles in to Denali, McKinley comes out

McKinley over Wonder Lake

Arctic Fox

Caribou not far from where the guy from California was killed by a bear. First documented Grizzly death in the parks 95 year history.

Mom and cubs

End of the road

Second Stop: Homer

Full Moon over Kachemak Bay

Homer Spit

Fly from Homer over to Katmai National Park to walk among the bears.

Flight over

Final approach

The bears

This monster came out of nowhere. Adrenalin rush.

This shows how close we were. That’s our shadows.

Fatest, laziest Bear I’ve ever seen

This is when you know you’re at the top of the food chain

BBC crew filming a special on the Bears of Katmai. Should be ready next spring.

The runway. Lead plane taking off.

Homer Spit from the air

Third Stop: Seward

Hiked Exit Glacier

Kenai Fjords

Sea Lions

Harbor Seals

Puffin

Wow! Fantastic pics! Really stokes me to go back. I'v traveled all over the world. I'v been places and done things that some people only dream about - and most people have never heard of! But the one place I am really eager to back to is Alaska. I bet a week doesn't go by that I don't think about it.

Our next trip is probably going to be spent entirely on the Kenai Penninsula. A couple of days in Sewerd, a couple of days in Homer, and a trip to see the bears. I'd like to work in a deep sea fishing day, too.

I am ready to go back. Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the world. Should have spent a summer up there working in college.

I had a friend that did that...he called me about a month in and told me to tell anyone that called me from Alaska that his dad had died! He couldn't get out of their fast enough! He was working in a fish processing plant.

Anyway, BEAUTIFUL pictures. Alaska looks like my kinda place...except for one thing...I hate the cold. My family has a place in Maine and we barely get three weeks in there where the weather is agreeable.

People complain about the heat here in San Diego, but not me, I LOVE IT!

Anyway beautiful pics, and I hear that there is some REALLY beautiful territory in Canada as well. Maybe one day I will happen to be there and find it wasn't as cold as I think it is.

Hideous. Don't go there either. Especially Banff and Jasper.

It's only really cold in the winter, and some areas like Vancouver, and much of southern coastal BC, stay pretty mild year round.

56 years young, and I am still exploring BC and Alberta's spectacular wilderness, but would really love a trip to Alaska some day. I love seeing wildlife, but am not a fan of Grizzly's. I prefer to see animals I can eat..not the other way round..

Great pictures! Thanks for sharing..

We have friends that live in Vancouver WA and another that lives in Vancouver BC, and, well, I guess it all depends upon what your definition of "mild" is. Anything below 60 and I don't care for it. Every year it gets down into the 30s here in San Diego during the winter, at least where I live, and I really don't care for it. So much so that I have even considered a residence on the other side of the equator so as to have a "never ending summer". Wife enjoys the cold and the economy hasn't cooperated so the two houses on different halves of the world hasn't worked out...yet!

New Zealand looks intriguing, and we have friends that have a place there, but it is a pretty long plane ride. Anyway, lots of beautiful places I would like to visit, but probably wouldn't want to live there.

BTW- We are having the first rain of the season right now in San Diego, and I am not happy. Some years it waits until late November or early December to start raining here. This is the time of year I usually get the majority of yard work done as it is cooler, yet not raining. This is hunting season also, and I prefer it a bit milder, but not wet. We'll see what next week brings!
