There can be extreme humor in some tragedy. A well earned reward. What a "maroon".

I would have to disagree, there are cultures that live off insects. Definitely not something I would do, but I just find this as a tragic accident. Cockroaches are not toxic in any way, so I would guess some sort of allergic reaction here.

IMO stupid yes, deserving of Darwin award, no. To me this is no different than a hot dog eating contest, just another source of protein.

Like shrimp. Since they are biologically very similar.

Cause of death is unknown. Reason for death is unknown. Why is this a "Darwin Award"?

One wonders whether there was anything on the bugs that might have had this effect; it could have been a completely random heart attack or something like that, but human nature leads us to think there was a connection between the event and the death -- especially in a 32-year-old person. I'm sure the autopsy will include a full toxicology screening and so forth. I hope the guy wasn't unwittingly poisoned during the (quite disgusting) contest.

Did anyone else find the pet store's comments kind of funny in a black humor sort of way?!

Cheers, John

He had also entered a superworm-eating contest earlier in the night

They were feeder insects and worms raised to be reptile food and there were 29 other contestants in the contest.

Definition of the Darwin Award.

The Darwin Awards: "Honoring (posthumously, of course) those who have removed themselves from the gene pool in the most spectacular or humiliating manner. Some of these stories are true, some false; all reveal human nature at its most bizarre."

I think it applies.

John O

Exactly. It remains to be seen if he has removed himself from the gene pool. He certainly did not do anything dangerous or reckless.

From the article:

Archbold, who was competing for a free python, was stricken outside the Deerfield Beach business, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

Stricken by the bugs' relatives and friends, by a car, by the side effects of whatever he consumed before and during the contest? Great reporting apparently.

He might have aspirated and choked to death as his lungs filled with the worm and roach slurry.

I'm thinking cardiac arrest from an underlying condition and the stress of the competition (or excitement of winning (or excitement at winning). A shellfish allergy is plausable as they are close relatives.

A small stomach or bowel hole would not be fatal quickly (it would take several days to die of infection) and a roach would not be capable of inflictinng such an injury.

I would take a lot more than a snake for me to undertake the unpleasant task of overcoming my cultural resistance to eating bugs (as irrational as I know it is).

This could be related? Perhaps he took some drugs to help him get through the contest. I would need a bunch.

For those who have not attended SERE or Survival training, try not to eat this stuff raw. The thought of eating bugs really made me good at catching rabbits and birds. I have eaten grasshopper, ants, and assorted other bugs. All roasted!!!

I'm with you Geoff... Did my survival training in African bush in 1982, ate a bunch of bugs etc..... but cooked most of it.

This guy was an idiot , but the shop had better have good insurance.
