Stewart screwed up & said as much after the race. Shame, looked like 4 or 5 cars had a chance to make it an interesting run @ the line.
Busch running from the safety crews was almost as entertaining..

The thing I like about this replay is that it shows all the crazy stuff that EVERYONE was doing before the incident. Look at what Kenseth got away with just a couple laps before! Wow! Very lucky. Stewart was just trying to preserve his position and I didn't see anything there that any of the other guys weren't also doing. Yeah it was ultimately his fault, but he was simply racing hard, not trying to take anyone out. Same with all of them. NASCAR wanted close racing and has instituted a number of things to insure that, and this is what they asked for. I wouldn't be surprised if some or almost all the big drivers get together next year and boycott this race if it is again a plate race.
I don't really think what Stewart did was right. Just one lap earlier Matt let him pass because he was much faster, that might have been the smart move for him with Waltrip. He could have finished well up in the order and not torn up. I wish they would stop using the plates and just move the fans up for safety. It's not like they needed those seats, the place was not close to capacity.
What's it going to take? Someone got to get hurt or die? This plate racing is the worst product NASCAR puts out there. The drivers don't like it, I don't like it (yes I'm speaking for all racing fans), ticket sales are down, TV ratings are down. Time to get a clue.
Ah, the irony of Tony Stewart blocking! That's just perfect.

and have smaller displacement motors for the superspeedways....or design a chip the feeds less fuel to the injectors....it was shaping up to a good finish then bang!...i shut off the TV in disgust right at the moment..a lot of good finishes and cars ruined...thats not racing
Boycott a NASCAR RACE.... that is funny.... How do you do that with about 2000 drivers as good or better waiting in the wings just hoping for a shot at the big time.
Getting hurt or dying is not in the picture.... all that has been done...
Remember a guy named Dale Earnhardt.
What they are looking for is more mini-big ones....
They have tried everything under the sun... the only thing that worked was the year they ran the wicker bill across the roof..... remember that... more drafting and passing then you could count... damn if I know why the done away with that.
This is from someone who has been involved in stockcar racing since the mid sixty's. the drivers are not going to boycot plate races and if they did NASCAR would hold the race without them, they have before and would do it again. If you don't want to bend up your car or don't have the nerve, run behind the pack.
The restrickter plates are the best way to hold down speeds at a low cost and crowds are down from economic reasons and excellent tv coverage not big wrecks. Attendants is already coming back up at Bristol because the track grinding has resulted in more pushing and shoving like the old days.
The owners have plenty of $$ to replace cars and they are so safe now, the chance of serious injury is very small.

Just another in a long line of stupid races at Talledega. The track should be bulldozed, or part of it should anyway.Nascar has been messing w/ the cars for 30 years and are too enamored w/ "tradition" to see the answer. It's not the cars, it's the track. I have been sending emails to Nascar for a few years now w/ these suggestions for Talle and Daytona which is nearly as bad:
Daytona- run the road course version
Talledega-
1- Do something like Pocono w/ 3 turns all different.
2- Do a road course like Daytona and cut the banking in half.
The problem is there is no need to lift out of the gas anywhere on the track. If you do, you go backward very quickly. So the way to drive it is never lift and just steer.
The key for both of these is to have turns where the driver has to drop 30-40 mph from top speed.
BTW, Tony definately messed up. But it's not what he did, it's when he did it. Moving over in front of whatever lane is coming fastest is normal procedure there. He miscalculated his timing on the lane change.

Craig, I only semi agree with you there, Waltrip had such a head of steam coming up on Stewart, that I think any move to come down in front of the 55 would have resulted in some torn up race cars.

I agree. Surely with all Stewart's experience, he would know that with #55 getting a push like that, it would be travelling much faster then him. Dumb friggin move, trying a block like that.
I could see a rookie doing that, but Stewart must have had a brain fart..What did he expect would happen, Waltrip to just step on the brake..?

Isn't that EXACTLY what Kenseth did two laps before?

I agree. They need to make some changes. However, they have a bunch of people talking about the race. That is success for NASCAR.
I am w/ you there Cobra Cory. I watched some of an Aussie race last week or so. Really fun racing. I stopped after about 15 minutes cause I didn't recognize the drivers or the cars. But the racing reminds me of a modern 70s TransAm race.
