I found the following two paragraphs in an article about NASCAR TV contract renewals. It appears that Fox (owner of SPEED) is changing the format of SPEED in a manner that gearheads will not lilke:
Quote:
However the curveball in a new FOX deal is the impact the network's change of SPEED into Fox Sports One, a new all sports channel that will carry Major League Baseball, college football and basketball and other sports in addition to NASCAR programming.
Hoping to keep up with the likes of the ABC/ESPN, NBC/NBC Sports Network as well as CBS/CBS Sports Network pairings, FOX plans to flip the current motorsports and automotive channel into its own general sports cable network.
Say what you will about some of the junk programming that comes and goes on SPEED, I'd still rather have automotive and auto-sport related programming than other sports. Don't we have enough of that already on the other 64 sports networks on the dial?
"speedvision" was destroyed years ago when it became the 99 percent nascrap channel, and I doubt I've watched it for more than two hours of it since it changed. As far as I'm concerned, it's already dead....There's far FAR BETTER car and how totype content on you tube so that is my "channel" of choice now.
If you want some entertainment you can watch Pete at SWRNC or if you want more of just pro restoraation tips and" how to", James Freddies (muscle cars and hot rods -photo finish)in Arizona has a great channel.

consumer alert: I will never do business with esurance. Just google "esurance complaints", for a few examples why.
The only thing I've ever watched on SPEED is Car Warriors and once in a while they have a good "car guy" movie, but not even sure they do the movies anymore.
Don't watch NASCAR, don't watch F1, don't watch off-road dirt/truck/desert racing. Could care less about 98% of their programming on SPEED...
2006: 2/14 Delivery by Stewart Transport, 8/15 becomes a roller, 8/26 drivetrain installed, 10/15 first engine start, 12/23 wiring completed, 12/31 body test fit
2007: 2/25 first go-cart, 4/15 leaves for paint, 8/24 paint prep begins, 12/10 paint work completed
2008: 1/7 home from paint, 2/1 titled, tagged, and insured, 3/15 interior complete, 6/2 alignment, 6/4 Graduation
I'm sad as well. I watch F1 on speed, but I go to Velocity to watch car showes now. It seems that speed has given up what used to make it great.

VELOCITY is one of the few I watch regularly. SPEED lost me years ago.

F1 on speed, pretty much never watch it for anything else. Real crap these days. Sad as it is speed has become reality TV and bad reality TV at that. JMHO, Richard.

SPEED pulled an MTV. If you can remember back to around 1982 when MTV started and played only music videos (a new concept for the time) then changed to all these crappy reality shows and teen pregnancy crap.

Never heard of Velocity, I gather it's not available on cable from my provider.
SPEED does fulfill a need, as it is dedicated completely to the automobile, be it racing, hot rodding, the BJ auction, or whatever, at least it's car related. I really enjoy watching the Australian V8 Supercar race series, American LeMan races, Grand-Am, GT series racing, NHRA,, and occasionally M/cycle races.
NASCAR? Sure it's covered on there, which is understandable, as it is one of the biggest spectator sports in the USA. Sprint Cup races are not even shown on Speed, (least in Canada) so I can't understand this complaint, of over-coverage of NASCAR?
As mentioned, there is plenty of coverage of other sports already. To much coverage as far as I'm concerned..Football on weekends, is on every other channel it would seem. Golf, darts, bowling, hockey, something can always be found relating to them 24/7..but not so with car stuff.
Be a real shame if they change SPEED, but it's always about money..
Look at the early days of ESPN. Showed tons of auto racing and the channel took off. Then moved more into "main stream" and "Speed" took over. Speed is moving more to main stream, and there will definitely be another entity there to take it's place. Couldn't agree more about the MTV comment. I don't even know why Music Tele-Vision even exists as a channel anymore. IT SUCKS! Speed is following that example.
Velocity is great, and we have had our races televised on there before. NBC Sports bought some of the Velocity programing previously for our events, and our events have been on there.
There is something in the works for early 2013 involving a FFR car that I can't further discuss, but it should be televised on either Velocity or NBC Sports, or possibly on both, so keep your eyes open!
I might average about 10 minutes a month while surfing. It's been years since I gave a shit about that pathetic channel. As someone earlier said, they gave up on what made it great long ago. It's just too bad I've had to continue paying for it because of the package it's in.

Lol. I am with you.
The only reason I pay extra for Speed is for F1.

Velocity is a good channel for car related stuff but they lack coverage on various types of racing. SPEED was pretty good at that and SPEED isn't exactly dead. They are shifting more to an online community with SPEED2, which I'm sure will just become SPEED.

I miss regular world rally coverage. Speed has started to show a few 1/2 hr programs late at night, I guess they can't find some NASCAR people they have not talked to yet, cooks, truck drivers, Tail gaters etc. IMHO some of these world rally drivers are the best drivers in the world, no practice on the course to change car set up. They see the course for the first time and go for it. I know they have pace notes and a navigator and lots of data on the course but these guys have one shot at their time.

I have to agree. Once Velocity kicked in with the latest format, I pretty much migrated over there from the Speed channel.

Hey, that's just what we need --- another network covering Football, basketball, and baseball 24 hours a day like it were breaking news every time some overpaid jock sneezes or farts. I've found the evolving youtube channels to be a much better source for my gearhead fix.

Yep, I agree this. To a point, who watches TV anymore? TV shows are pirated or legally played again online within hrs of the show ending. I already get my news off of the internet and usually from forums. The important stuff is talked about as it's happening online or shortly after. Then there are YouTube channels like Drive where Jerry Ferrara reviews some awesome rides. StreetFire is a great car related video website, can watch every episode of Top Gear UK. For college students, the TV is used to hook up the PS3 or Xbox. PS3 and a Netflix account, no need to ever watch TV [live] again. I do miss the History and SyFy channels though... Some cable / dish companies are already starting to stream online for customers, I'm sure in a few more years much of TV will be watched, online. This will turn into everyone using their TV's as a 2nd monitor for their computers, and back to watching TV, live, on TV through the internet.

It is already a reality. I have been watching TV shows as well as Hulu, YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon on my TV for about the last year. No computer required. It is built into my TV. It even connects wirelessly so no need to run any extra cables.
Jalopnik's confirmed that SPEED won't have F1 next year. Other than that and MotoGP, there's no reason to watch since they went to their all-NASCAR- and -arguing-knuckheads programming.

I can't believe I'm the only one to post...
...I feel no need, no need... for SPEED!
no reason to watch MotoGP as they well and truly butcher that as well. Did you see the LIVE Laguna race where they came back from commercial and greg white yammered on over a shot of a hillside and missed the only meaningful pass of the race as it happened?!? And then the announcers were surprised! That was the only event (of any kind) all year that I planned to watch and the last. Good riddance.
I'm a dedicated F1 fan, even got the wife hooked. I hope F1 finds a home somewhere, maybe Velocity? With one Grand Prix in the United States this year (Austin) and another slated for New Jersey next year, one would think someone will pick up the F1 broadcasts.

Well, after November SPEED will have no more attraction for me.
Found out watching Formula 1 qualifying this morning, and as mentioned above, that SPEED won't be covering F1 in 2013. So after this season it'll be on NBC.
Not confident that I'll like that either. As least SPEED broadcast qualifying and the races live. I'll bet NBC will tape-delay the races and edit them to fit in their 2-hour broadcast windows on Sunday afternoons. And I doubt that they'll broadcast qualifying which can be very entertaining.
Oh well,...
