Painting stained and poly'd wood.

OK so anyone have good tips on painting wood that has already been stained and polyurethaned? I painted the wood but if you take your fingernail to it, it peels right off, down to the poly. I am just doing the window in my bathroom so not that big a deal to replace the casing but the inside of the window is stained and poly'd as well as the trim. Trim I can replace. The window not so much. Should I use an etching primer or something. 'Cause sanding didn't do it. I still have a couple more windows to do later during the winter. Painting the inside of my house is this Winters project. It was really last years project but never got done. I just sat around and got fat instead....

Etching primers are meant for metal priming and really won't do anything to the poly. You will most probably need to strip the poly off the wood with a good epoxy stripper to get to a good base for the paint to adhere to. You may try a little shellac on the poly to see if that will adhere well enough for the paint to stick also.

Strip or sand. No other option.

Many modern paints / varnishes need the lower coat to be new if over painting. Ie have to cover within set period.

So adding poly over old coat often can be an issue, especially if not exact Same paint

Have to strip or sand to get good bond.

Could try small area and rough sand and paint new poly and let it dry and test after a few days.

Far too many coats of varnish on my sail boats, after trying modern paints over the years, I went back to yacht spar varnish, and built up the finish the old way, 10 coats thinned and wet sanded between.

John I actually thought of that last night myself. I think I'll pick up a QT and see how it works at adhering to the poly. Not like people are going to try to scrape the paint off my trim or anything. Or at least I hope not, but I just don't want to have to keep touching up stuff once it is done.

you can have it tinted if need be close to finish paint color.

shellac base has a high flash rate so NO smokin cleans up with denatured Alcohol.
waterborne cleans with H2O (stuff dries fast into the brush so watch you don't over-stroke the painted area too much it will pull on you)
