Anyone in the Florida panhandle area?

I might be relocating to Eglin AFB to take a new job in the next two weeks. I'm really not familiar with the area at all and I was wondering if there is anyone here that is local or has lived there in the recent past that may be able to point me in the direction of good areas to look for housing or which areas I should avoid?

I'm a fresh grad coming out of college with a MS in engineering, my soon to be wife and I, along with the 2 cats and a dog, would be relocating pretty quickly so and advice is welcome.

Folks used to live in Niceville in the Rocky Bayou area. It's a nice, and safe area. Destin is nice (some of the nicest beaches you'll find) albeit a bit pricier, and further from Eglin. Ft. Walton is just ok in my opinion.

Buying or renting?

The beaches are amazing and of course the closer your get to them, the more money you will pay...

Renting for now, probably for 6mo or a year while I build up a sufficiently large down payment and get a better feel for the area.

Gotten word that I'll be on the side of the base near Niceville/Valparaiso, so I guess that helps narrow down the area a bit.

While you are young and free, don't rule out the Island where the action is. I lived in Niceville when I first got there, but the trek to go out killed some nights I probably would have gone. There are bridges now that didn't exist back then, making the trip more convenient, but Niceville is suburbia.

Although I'm not there now, I've done two tours at Eglin, lived there a total of seven years. Are you planning on renting or buying?

If you're buying, I'd recommend finding a place in Ft Walton, Mary Esther, or Valparaiso. Close to the base but also close to the beach and prices are less than Niceville or Blue Water Bay. Don't go west of Hurlburt Field on Hwy 98, as 98 is frequently a big parking lot during rush hour. If you don't care about going to the beach and nightlife, but want more house for the money, look in Crestview.

If you're renting, Okaloosa Island is great place to live.
