No Playing Outside

At the risk of getting "spanked" by the moderators for trolling again:

Mom Arrested For Letting Kids Play Outside | Wizbang

This story from Texas of a woman spending a night in jail, for letting her kids play(ride motorized scooters) outside. I'm sure this is not the whole story, it does not say: how loud the scooters are, if the kids were on the sidewalk or street, if they were wearing helmets, if they were ever out of moms view........................... But I have to believe that some officer left his "common sense" in his locker at the station. Am I clueless? and why?

Seems ridiculous but methinks there's more to this than is being reported by the mom.

We got busted a few times for riding our mini-bikes on the street when I was a kid but mom avoided hard time with some sweet-talking to the officers.

I know she had issues with the neighbor that reported her, and who knows who really started the feud in the first place, so it just sounds like the neighbor took a cheap shot and the cops didn't sort it out properly.

If children are allowed to play outside and fend for themselves for a few hours they might develop of sense of independence and self-reliance which is politically dangerous.

I had an old guy threaten me with a shotgun for riding a mini bike around my friends neighborhood. We got the idea. Man how times have changed!

Oh... crap. Looks like the cops will be called on me; not only did I let my kids free range, I've even taken my youngest camping in sub-zero weather.

Anyone have some extra money to help bail me out?

(and my poor mother, rest her soul, would have done hard time allowing me to roam the hills of Southern Utah rife with rattlesnakes and such as a 9 year old armed only with a pocket knife, a .22, and a sack lunch)

Same here, by the time I was a teenager with wheels my shotgun and rifle stayed in my locker all day, no one even looked twice. I don't think it's so much about the "scooters" as mom was cuffed and jailed for endangerment(charges dropped next day).

Our mothers would have been cellmates. We were sent off in the Palo Duro Canyon of west Texas at dusk with flashlights, .22's, and a pump action 12 guage(for snakes) to go rabit hunting and did not come back till dawn. She might have been given the chair because we did not get a sack lunch, we did however fill a canteen filled from the same well horses drank from.

LOL! Ditch water... skim the water-skiders and scum away then drink up!

This is bringing back some fun memories.

She is suing the PD, city and neighbor. This is one time where I think a law suit is warranted. I hope she wins.

I built shelters outside and practiced survival skills before I was 12. On winter days I picked a tiny island on the globe and designed complex self contained survival compounds complete with all utilities and a sustainable food supply.

The "Ant and the Grasshopper" fable got to me.

After years of having a childless neighborhood we finally have two families who have kids playing here and it's such a joy to see kids on the street and chalk hopscotch outlines again.

Looks like we have a neighbor feud and a LEO who had a chance to defuse a situation and blew it.
