Using 427 style sidepipes and headers on my 289FIA build instead of the standard 289FIA exhaust?

Oh my, please don't. Yes, blasphemous. And may I add, ugly.

Boy, don't I feel foolish for even thinking of doing this. The top two original guys telling me to stay the course.
I will abide by your decision!

Jeff Burgy has a sweet 289 FIA w/ 427-style sidepipes on it. I can't remember if it's ERA or Unique. Burgundy car w/ white stripes, white FIA wheels, and white pipes. You can probably find him on CC.
i like blasphemus on both sides:
4 into 4 blasphemus
4" pouring out the 289 blasphemus
go for it
and "to each your own"

If it were me, I would just go with the 427 style headers and pipes, bbq black, or, if the car is a dark color, high temp white, and drive the crap out of it.
That said, you are a purist and likely won't be happy with that. You probably need to go with the original.
Either way you choose, it will turn out well, I'm sure.

Your GT40 was a work of art. You have set a high bar that you will undoubtably achieve on this build also. I would follow your vision, but personaly I think the 427 pipes will look out of place.

Bill, in my previous post I used the word ugly and that was the wrong word. I just think the side npipes are too large for the FIA. Just my opinion. Here is a link to Jeffl Burgy's beautifully done ERA. Still not my cup of tea.

Were there any 289FIA cars w/ side pipes? That would be your way out if you can find one. But I think they should be a smaller diameter than the standard FFR pipes. There was someone who did some recessed into the rocker area pipes a few years ago. Maybe they would be a compromise.

When it comes down to the bottom line, isn't it technically blasphemous to build a replica in the first place? I think that the link to the pictures of the 289 with side pipes looks fantastic. It's your creation, I say go for it.

The exhaust on the 289 FIA cars were sidepipes that went beneath the rocker panels. The 427 raised the sidepipes to get more ground clearance

Bill,
If you are concerned with ground clearance I suggest sticking with a stock FFR style ride height (actually the FIA is 1/2" higher from ground to frame rail). When I was dropped down for VIR (could not adjust any lower without bottoming out the coil overs) I would rub getting in and out of my driveway. Now that I am reset to stock ride height, I have no problems, not even with some of the oversize speed bumps they have here in PA.

although...i may have a slight bias to the ERA ..I don't think you will go wrong...it is a replica..build it how you want...with what you've done so far its going to turn out great

Then embrace the FIA for what it is, not what it is not.

My plan is to follow through with as much originality as my budget can stand.

If you decide to build your own you could try these inserts instead of mufflers. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PTE-H3844/
I put a pair in my FFR pipes after the glasspack and they really quieted it down. I am thinking 2-3 in each side could do the job w/o mufflers. They are cheap and would be easy to try before you weld on turndowns. Once you get a sound level you are happy w/ tack them in place and install turndowns. Nice thing is they never blow out like fiberglass packing.
