my Texas and "western" friends... i need cowboy hat etiquette advice

<---- dumb NYC kid here

of course, you guys know everything!

i am attending a wedding at a real ranch in Escondido, CA. it's both of my friend's second wedding so they are doing it the fun way.... they asked everyone to dress as "rustic western" as possible. jeans, boots, etc.

i got the whole outfit... boots, shirt, HUGE belt buckle, and a hat. it has been confirmed i do NOT have a "formal hat" so that's good.

i'm sitting in the second row at the ceremony, so it's not like i can copy everyone else... and even so, i'd like to be the one everybody follows.

so, what do i do? hat on when waiting for the ceremony to start? hat off when the bride comes?

the ceremony is outdoors and the entire reception under a covered canopy. can i sit and eat dinner with my hat on?

i'll take it off for the prayer, etc. but i'd love to know what to do.

thanks y'all

My wife would die laughing as she gives me grief relentlessly for my wranglers and boots (daily wear) given where we live. At last, I can answer a question of culture and etiquette and cowboy in the same sentence.

Guests sitting down for the wedding? Man, it IS formal.
I've been to a few and the only ones sitting were the bride and groom on horseback.

Hat stays on until the ceremony.
Take your hat off and keep it off as soon as the ceremony begins unless the wedding party sets the tone otherwise.
Dining indoors and mixed company - hats off
Outside meal can go either way
When you put your hat down on say a table, put it upside down. Otherwise it messes up the brim.
DO NOT wear jeans too short! If you wear an inseam of 30/32" buy a 36/38" inseam.
If you want to look dressed up, iron a crease on the front and back of the leg part.
A real dressed up look is a bolo tie.
Buy a can of skoal (or a round can of bubble gum) and put it in your back pocket.
Guns are ok, spurs are not.
If you have a truck, take the truck.

And never touch another cowboy's hat....or

VPR-KLR is right on every point, well done Sir. I'll add a few:
Boot cut Wranglers only, NO Levis
DO NOT put your pants inside your boots
Hat off for the ceremony
Hat off if you sit to eat indoors or out
Hat off when you are introduced to a woman, back on after you exchange names
When introduced to a man, slid hat to the back of the head until you exchange names then back to your brow (left handed)
Skoal in hip pocket (sorry victor1)

disclaimer: I've NEVER owned a "cowboy" hat, I did go to Montana State, and my roommate for two years was there on a calf-roping scholarship and I dated lots of cowgirls.

that's all right, if you want to sit on a plastic can (skoal) or the paper copenhagen can and have it come apart in your pocket that is fine. only reason to put it in the hip pocket is cause your t shirt don't have one. greenhorn. and don't touch your hat when introduced to a man unless you are gay. lol

When introduced to any lady 18 or older, say " howdie mam " while holding hat to your chest.

Saw this yesterday:

Lore
Placing your hat upside down on its crown not only serves to help from smashing the brim, but some believe it can bring you good fortune. Cowboys thought their upside-down hats would catch the good luck floating around, according to the Hawkeye Tack website. Cowboys also believed that letting the hat brim touch their beds would bring bad luck. Some have taken the superstition further by saying that placing any part of the hat on your bed can bring about horrible things, including death.

LOL, I own a few hats, and concur well done guys! Especially the Wranglers--outside the boots! Hope you have a great time Eddie, oh and pack a cooler full of Coor's (or Keystone) Cans for Authenticity

My friend Billie's Montana wedding...

The last wedding I attended in Cali... Broken board and all!

And last but not least, remember real Cowboys don't wear cowboy hats!
1) Cowboys are often required to ride FOUR in the front of a pickup!
2) Most of my Old cowboy buddies don't want to be confused with Truck Drivers!

man! this is almost as fun as halloween!

i got the truck, it's a 4x4 so i'm set. i got (borrowed) the hat, HUGE belt buckle as recommended. i have black leather motorcycle boots, they will do. looking for a western shirt today. i will be shopping in thrift stores in Pomona, which has a large Mexican community - so hopefully i can find something along the lines of "bandito" - like Bill's picture.

i'll bring some Skoal Bandit, but only if my shirt has a front pocket.

what is the freaking name of that rope thingy you wear around your neck in place of a tie? in the boy scouts, we called it a kercheif, sometimes worn in place of a neckercheif, but i searched online for kercheif and all i got back is women's head coverings.

i tried to search for it, but i don't know what to search for!

??

YES i'll share the picture of me when i am all done!

Eddie if you really want to look the part, stop by a tanning salon and have them spray on a facial tan........just remember to tape off your forehead half way up.

Too bad you aren't close by, I could loan you the gun rack and a hat rack.
