I don't think Eddie is double counting them. I don't think he is counting the white squares inside the thick black outlines again. I think he is counting the thick black outlines as boxes.
Eddie, where are you, splain your actions!!!
Sorry, squares don't have holes in them. I think 40 is the right answer. You could say that many of them are an outline and the last seven are just a thicker outline. But that gets you back to someone who said they are just duplicates. I guess we need a detailed answer on the definition of the word "square". And what about those squares that have a smaller square in one corner, are they still squares? When I first counted myself I didn't count them as squares cause the smaller square makes them into an "L". Jeez they say excersizing the brain keeps it working better but this is crazy.

Yep, those are the same ones I got and think of it as drawing the square with a thick marker instead of a thin line pen. Argueable if this is the intent but they are squares.
I also found a few more but you really have to think outside the box on these ones. So I am up to 50 or 54 depending. Will post them in a bit.
the last 7 only reproduce the ones originally counted in those positions with the centers "hollowed" out . . . creating boxes, not squares. You know, like when you take those stupid tests that ask you to draw a "box" around all the objects that match the sample . . .
Just my 2¢
And . . . there's always the fact that all squares are rectangles, so do we get to count the rectangles that we see in the drawing too? That would sure up the count by a few . . .

The last 7 are bogus. If they're not, then I'm up into the 60's.
Who says the interior needs to be square shaped then? Color and uncolor squares in the middle of those 7 and you start getting into the 60's and honestly, the interior is meaningless.
A square is defined by its sides, not by it's interior.
square/skwe(ə)r/
Noun:
A plane figure with four equal straight sides and four right angles
The bogus 7 are just repeats. There are only 40.

Well, if you want to think outside of the box ... since the lines as drawn are 2 dimensional, each cell actually has an inner and outer border, both of which are different squares. You can get at least 80 this way.
