While doing some family research, I've discovered that my Grandfather served on the USS Cyrene (AGP-13.) I'm hoping that somone might be able to assist me with understanding some Navy ranks/ratings.
Looking at the WW-II muster roles he is listed as both a CM1c (Machinist Mate First class?) and CMM (AA)(T). Googling the WW-II Navy ranks, it looks like CMM is Chief Machinist Mate (which fits with what we know about his civilian trade.) And the AA rate indicates a Master at Arms. So, my question is, if his last recorded rank is the CMM(AA)(T) what would that be?
Thanks,
Ray

I was a Master at Arms.. and the abbreviation should me "MA"
CMM = Chief Machinist Mate
AA = Acting Appointment
T = meant temporary. During WWII the huge buildup of personnel caused the Navy Department to look forward to the day that fewer personnel would be needed, thus the Navy Department anticipated demoting Temporary Rates when demobilization occured. However, reduction in Rate never occured and the Temps who remained in the Navy were never demoted to a peacetime Rate.
You will see others that are listed with the PA designation. That means Permanent Appointment.
Thanks to all. My Dad was estranged from his father who left the family back in the late 30's and I never met him. The journey through Ancestry (.) com has been very interesting and enlightening. Ancestors that left Prussia in 1848 due to the German revolution only to end up enlisting in the 4th Missouri Volunteers to fight for the Union in the Civil War. Others (from the other side of the family) were in the Confederate Army. My Great-Grandfather crossed from the Yukon Territories to the Alaskan Territory, driving a dog sled to become a US citizen (and work the gold fields.) Trades such as Master cabinetmaker, millers, constables, foundry/pattern work owners, wagon wheel maker, railroad brakemen, farmers and more.
It been really cool to see all that both sides of the family has been involved with.
Thanks again for the Navy info. My Grandfather served on the USS Cyrene at the same time as Don Rickles!!!
