Anyone have any ownership experiences. My wife will be needing a replacement for her 01 5.0 explorer we have owned since new in the next 12 months and are starting to explore options. Test drove one and like the ride and interior room seems decent for what we need. We occasionally pull a 19 foot sailboat total eight 1000 with trailer

I was looking at 2012's but opted for a different option. They appear to be a good vehicle but I just read my consumer reports and they are well below average for reliability according to them. Something to consider researching.

Not trying to hijack your thread, I'm interested as well, same scenario (replacing wife's '01 daily driver in the next few months) and I've been looking at the Edge, but didn't check Consumer reports yet (good to know).
What would be comparable in this class?

A guy I work with had an Edge. I don't know if they are all like this, but it was definitely a problem child. The trans had to be replaced 2 times, the thing would randomly stall, and the inner tie rods all took a hike. From what I read, these are pretty common problems.
There was an article on Yahoo (probably copied from Consumer Reports) stating they were one of the top 5 vehicles NOT to buy.
Brakes suck on the earlier models. I think there are better options out there, such as a Mazda CX-7 or 9. Nissan Murano. Toyota 4 Runner can't be beat as far as reliability goes. If buying new, then the newer Explorers are nice, but not cheap.

My daughter has a 2009 Edge and she loves it. No issues except, I replaced the battery when it died and one rear shock started to leak. I changed them last weekend. She has around 45,000 miles on it.

- If the answer to the question is "the government" it was a stupid question to begin with.
I've got a 11 Edge Limited FWD, just passed 50k miles. Been great so far. It had a few minor issues with the Myford Touch system, but after they did a major update to it this spring the problems have all gone away. I occasionally tow out 21' runabout, a sea doo, or a lawn mower and it does fine. My gas mileage is about 21 around town - but it does drop to about 12 with the boat behind it - i usually trade my dad for his avalanche if I am taking the boat out. The sea doo and lawnmower are no problem, but the boat is right at the 3500 max tow rating.
I put a lot of miles on my vehicles, so I'll probably replace it in a year or 2, and will definitely look at them again next time, or maybe an explorer.
You've probably already done this but have you looked at Lincoln MKX. We started out looking at the Edge liked it and found all the Edge options to be standard on the Lincoln. I typically buy used and look hard and was able to find several <30K mile vehicles that look good condition and dollar wise. We are down to two finalist just decided on color now.
Everyone I know that has this vehicle has been very happy with it. We'll see.
I've seen one on the road but no I haven't been up close and personal with one. I'll be sure to do that as I have plenty of time. Plan to buy in the next 12 months when the right one comes along
