Electric vs propane fireplace?

I am installing a fireplace in my new construction home. I was going to go with propane but the new elctric fireplace look very real. Anyone have experience with one or both of these choices?

Here's the link to the electric;

I love the Rockwell Optimist electrics. In the store you couldn't tell it wasn't a propane fire or wood fire. (I still think room lighting is very important around a fireplace to make the effect look even better. Stray light kinda kills the effect of the newer 3d fires. Consult a lighting person if going with an electric one.) We actually looked at buying one (electric) for our basement remodel as I cannot put a propane fireplace downstairs. The venting just wouldn't work for us because how the joists were laid out. Anyway Our upstairs $2000.00 propane stove one looks great and looks like a real wood stove fire, but you gotta have a tank and a big a$$ vent that cost me $1500.00 to install. Yes even with direct vent you need a in/out pipe that is 8" round now to meet code.

This is our stove one...

Isn't there such thing as a ventless propane fireplace?

YES

But I don't think I trust a fire using room air for combustion. Why not a real wood fireplace??

I have an electric fireplace/media stand in a room about 20 x 25 and it makes for a nice addition to my central unit. It's nice to be able to warm up just one room. Can't roast marshmallows on it though

I cant chime in to much since mines natural gas, but it seems the question would more be is this for pure aesthetic reasons or to actually heat your place?

Cause if you lose power in the winter it might be nice to have some heat which an electric wont be providing without some genny power.

Agreed. I have lost power up here in the boonies in the winter and the great thing about my propane stove is that it will fire off without power. Works on a milllivolt system of some type. Uses a 9volt battery.
