Here's a car I looked at very early on. The guy wanted $4,500. Besides having a nasty body, it had a blown head gasket and would not run. I took these photos.
This look like a pig built for slaughter and who knows if it actually ever did run!
No thanks. Scary restoration project that is and always will be a butchered TR4.
Such a shame
British car in Kamikaze mode I guess.
If you get it running, ok, but how do you get it to stop with standard Triumph brakes?
“Well, I got you a car!”
“What is it?”
“A little triumph sports car!”
“No way!”
“With an engine swap”
*groan* “Daaaad”
“No really! Here’s the starting procedure…”

With craigslist ads, I seem to get a flake rate of 50%, so I was a little concerned when I called the seller this morning that everything was still on to inspect/drive the car tomorrow.
However, car is still there and I will have first shot at it tomorrow as promised. I am pulling my checklist together and will only have about an hour to inspect, test drive and negotiate the deal. I've decided that if I do go through with the transaction, that I will come back with a trailer on Saturday.
Thanks again for all the insight into this marque.

A collection of Prince of Darkness jokes
(courtesy of Paul Mossberg, New Jersey Replicar Club)
The Lucas Electric motto: "Get home before dark."
Lucas denies having invented darkness. But they still claim "sudden, unexpected darkness."
Lucas--inventor of the first intermittent wiper.
Lucas--inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.
The three-position Lucas switch--DIM, FLICKER and OFF. The other three switch settings--SMOKE, SMOLDER and IGNITE.
The original anti-theft devices--Lucas Electric products.
"I've had a Lucas pacemaker for years and have never experienced any prob...
If Lucas made guns, wars would not start either.
Did you hear about the Lucas powered torpedo? It sank.
It's not true that Lucas, in 1947, tried to get Parliament to repeal Ohm's Law. They withdrew their efforts when they met too much resistance.
Did you hear the one about the guy that peeked into a Land Rover and asked the owner "How can you tell one switch from another at night, since they all look the same?" "He replied, it doesn't matter which one you use, nothing happens!"
Back in the '70s Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners. It was the only product they offered which didn't suck.
Quality Assurance phoned and advised the Engineering guy that they had trouble with his design shorting out. So he made the wires longer.
Why do the English drink warm beer? Lucas makes the refrigerators.
Alexander Graham Bell invented the Telephone.
Thomas Edison invented the Light Bulb.
Joseph Lucas invented the Short Circuit.
Recommended procedure before taking on a repair of Lucas equipment: check the position of the stars, kill a chicken and walk three times sunwise around your car chanting: "Oh mighty Prince of Darkness protect your unworthy servant."
Lucas systems actually uses AC current; it just has a random frequency.

Ken,
I hope the car is as good as the guy says it is. That's certainly a good price. I will be available if you want to ask a question.
I remember looking at my first TR6 from craigslist....I thought $10K was too much so I slept on it and it went the very next day. In hindsight, it was a good thing I didn't buy it. Things have a way of working out for the better.
Done deal. No rust, solid everywhere. It starts good stops straight and runs reasonably well. The ad and the pictures are a bit misleading. The items that were rebuilt, were done so 8 years ago. The new paint is not good and is done so over amateurish body work. It will need to be redone. Leaks oil, brake booster not working. All electrical works except hazard switch, speedo is off. Interior is good except the dash. Top is new. I think I bought it pretty well at $4300. Going back down on Sat with a trailer.
I will drive it for a while and get the odds and ends figured out. Then figure out what level I want to take this car to.
Thanks again for all the info, it really helped.

Dragged the car home today. Looks and runs a bit rough, but the car has potential and can't wait to get started. Took it for another spin and I think with some carb tuning and fixing the header leak, it will be a driver.

I advanced through a 63 TR-4, 67 TR-4, 70 GT-6+ and a 73 TR-6 over the years. The GT-6 was by far the poorest quality, but man I wish I had that 67 TR-4 back! Baby blue, white top and a beautiful wood dash. Good luck with your project, I'm jealous.

I notice most of the people in this pic seem to be looking off to the right. Did a Healey just drive into the lot?
LOL, They were walking toward the donuts. There were at least 3 very nice Healeys there as well as about every type of LBC made. It was one of the largest cross sections of cars I have every seen at one venue. TN folks love their cars!

A TR6 update. Coming up on two months of ownership and sorting the car out. The car pretty much needed a little of everything. The engine was rebuilt, but they skipped the carbs. I found a fresh pair, fixed the clutch linkage, tranny shifter, sorted the vacuum retard and got it timed, new filters...Car is now running like a champ.
I moved on to the dash, removing all aftermarket stereos, speakers and creative wiring. A few of the switches were bad, as was the aftermarket dash. I found a beautiful original wood '72 dash on eBay and purchased some NOS Lucas pieces. It will back together and on the road later this week. I made some adjustments while I had everything apart to accommodate my 6'4" body.
Still trying to figure out the look, but so far this is my favorite, although I'm leaning toward a medium blue color.

Paint her Royal Blue, pop for the minilite wheels and add the cream or sliver stripe like the photo.
Droooool,
Greg
That stripe was a TR 250 item and I don't believe was ever offered on the TR6. It was on every car and came only in silver (which went nicely with the reflective silver edging on the convertible top), and believe it or not, was painted on rather than some vinyl stick on. Here's directions on how to paint one, if anyone is so inclined: tr250 stripe instructions picture by saffrontr - Photobucket
