Wooden Boats

Has anyone here built one or knows someone who has. I'd love to build a Chris Craft wooden boat. Any wooden boat forums?

You can Restore a Chris Craft but I don;t think they will let you build one.
You should look up Glen-L plans online. I think they still sell plans.
I built a Tornado back when I was about 20 years old. Actually fairly easy to build. But the fiberglass I put on eventually de-laminated off the boat and I sold it off for the parts on it.

I saw one of these for sale once. Done in plain mahogany and stained instead of painted. I'd love to build one like that. It looked great. small for a first boat too. Glen L has plenty of support for builders and I think there is a forum for it too.

Glen-L Hot rod build site.

Cool little "Squirt" using a Jet Ski engine. Too small for the lake I live on but would be cool on a small lake....Does 50MPH.....

At least it is something to look at building as it is another simple design and can be built outside if need be.

Cory, Thanks for that video. I think these old boats are just works of art. That little jet boat would be a perfect start.

Hole in the water into which money is thrown.

This little Chris Craft slumber in my garage for the better part of 3 yrs.
The estimate to rework the underside to make it sea worthy again was north of 30k. They wanted 5k just to 'turn it over' on their jig so they could start taking the old wood out. Luckily it wasn't mine and I was just storing it for a friend.

It also had a nice old 283 in it.

Which needed a little work

There are a few forums out there, however, none of them really stood out as a good place to go. They tended to a bit of a snootier crowd (think stereo type of the corvette owner's forum and then multiply it by factor 4)

Corvette attitude X 4. No thanks. I just thought it would be cool to build one. I wounder what it would cost to build a 19 footer?

Check out this web site- Boat Plans & Kits | WoodenBoat Magazine

Search under " runabout " and you'll find several that are similar to the Chris Craft boats. Keep in mind that when they say "Advanced" under the boat building skill levels needed, you will need some prior experience and probably need to invest in some fairly expensive tools (and a substantial amount of time).

I've always wanted to build a beautiful cedar strip canoe and a Clone of a Chris Craft runabout but too many hobbies and too little time/money have kept me from attempting it yet. I did build a 17 foot drift boat from a kit many years ago and I've used it extensively for fishing and white water running for going on 30 years now. Nothing like a wooden boat on the water to make you unwind, IMHO.

The Glen L are cold molded wood....very cool method and very strong with the great looks of true strip build.

With the money you'd put in building or renovating one, why not just buy one?

We have a huge number of them up at Lake Tahoe and you usually see a number of these come on the market just before Labor Day as many people don't want to store them up at the lake over winter and don't want to bring them down from the mountains.

Here are just a couple on our local craigslist:

1948 Chris Craft Runabout with 283 Corvette Engine

1959 Chris Craft

Wooden Chris Craft

1958 Chris Craft Deluxe Runabout 17ft

The same could be said of an FFR but much of the joy is in the build.....

I plied the waters of the Pacific Northwest, in a 21' Glen-L cabin cruiser for a few years, before catching, in my case, fivefootitus.
They are actually a very good design, and very practical. I had a head, kitchen, and could sleep four quite comfortably in it. It was heavier than a glass boat, but handled the big seas with ease. A little more annual maintenance required than a glass boat, but nothing too strenuous..

I see they have a builders forum!

Not quite the same, but a good wooden canoe/kayak project.

Check out the Stripper's Guide to Canoe Building by David Hazen

I believe there are followup series about building wooden boats. I built a 17' mahagony strip canoe in 1978. 42lbs and still in good shape.

Hi,
i love the old wooden boats. When I was young I was lucky my parents took us to Alexandria Bay NY and got to see wooden boats back in the mid 60's. The Uncle Sam Tour boats were simple wooden boats with a wooden canopy. Here's a link to Clayton Boat Museum:

My great uncle built a wooden boat in 1951, and it's been restored twice since then...once by my uncle and recently by my brother. I believe it has a Jeep motor in it. I've never skied behind it, but my parents and other family members have. If your interested in seeing it, I'll take some pics of it.

There are hydraulic bunks under them. Not so much to lift them as to stabilize them. This is a sales boat house. They like them in the water so they can take them right out if a customer walks in.

Nonsense.....though you might have to modify the basement slightly to fit the mast like I did

I built a one ocean kayak in my basement.

Fit out the window wonderfully after I removed the deck and moved the hot tub I had installed over the 2 year build period.

Cedar strip is plenty of fun, may try a bigger boat some day.
