Question way off topic: KFC chicken wings

i love KFC chicken wings. I have noticed that every time i eat one, one of the two bones in the center section is ALWAYS broken, not both just one EVERY TIME. Does the kfc buy defective chickens, or is it in the way they are prepared, Just curious as to how it can happen every time. anyone else noticed this or have an explanation??

I think the chickens owed them money.

You are probably not going to like this, but...

It has been well-documented that workers in the processing plants for KFC routinely mistreat the birds before slaughter. "Mistreat" includes a number of egregious behaviors I prefer not to repeat here. Google broken wings on KFC chickens and you'll get plenty of grisly details.

Don't know the reason why all the wings you get are broken. However, it is possible that the homones the chickens are treated with in combination with the conditions in which they are raised and shipped make the bones prone to breakage. Further mistreatment of the live chickens helps the process along.

they are called miscuts or disjointed... they typically sell for 20% less than "perfect" wings.

on a side note, wings have doubled in price over the last year. a year ago, I was selling them for about $1.00 a pound...they're up to $2.00 now. It's a supply and demand thing. 10 years ago, wings were a "fall off item" that places bought because they were cheap...they are now a staple item for America's restaurants.

on another side note, since we're talking chicken....watch chicken and egg prices the next month. I just got notice this morning that the droughts have killed off about 6 million egg producing hens recently, and those that are making it are not producing eggs as much due to the extreme heat.

Speaking of chicken wings I love them and frequent Buffalo Wild Wings once or twice a month. Last night while I was there I noticed they changed their menu to now reflect calorie count. FYI, 12 wings was something like 1100 calories.. Guess I need to eat less wings and drink more beer.

All you need to do is wash them down with a diet Coke...well known fact that a diet Coke cancels out the calories!

The bones are broken on purpose to facilitate bleed out in the cooking process. Otherwise, you bite into the wing and get a mouthfull of blood. Many processors do the legs the same way.

Snake.. Go eat some wings at Buffalo Wild Wings. You won't have to deal with broken wing bones and they taste great! I've never had a mouthful of chicken blood either.. Always lots of TV screens and a great selection of beer.

I recommend the Parmesan Garlic and Teriyaki.. unless you like HOT..

I can't buy this. I get all my wings from Publix and always the whole wing. I separate them at the joints discard the tip and NEVER see a drop of blood. Very rarely are any of the bones broken

I greatly prefer the "flats" over the "drums". They're rarely broken. I order all flats if the restaurant allows...

Quaker Steak and Lube might be in my future this weekend.

I agree. Not sure why people think the drums are better? A lot of the time there is more meat on the flats.

With choices like QS&L, Hooters, WingHouse, BWW/B-Dubs, why would you get wings at KFC anyway?

Here is a wise man. When my wife and I go out for dinner at a new place, she will ask how I liked it. If the food was just fair, I will tell her "The food was good. But the company was better."

Yup. A happy wife makes for a happy life.

My BS meter just wrapped the needle around the peg.

It amazes me that so many otherwise decent people make up or repeat lies without any real information to back it up. This has now spread from politics to poultry........

After spending over 30 years writing specifications for food, negotiating for the purchase of food and countless plant and processor inspections the false charges that were posted are harder to swallow than the rivers of blood I have personally seen.

While there are isolated incidents of animal cruelty in some plants by some stupid people they also occur in your neighbors homes....it is not something that a for profit business puts up with. A modern poultry processor is as organized and efficient as the corvette assemly line at GM. It's not pretty and yes animals die, they are there to die fast, efficiently and with a minimum of wasted effort.

And the claim that the bones are broken to promote bleeding is just plain fantasy.

If you see a pattern of or a large quantity of defects in any given companies products it reflects thier purchasing standards and practices. Higher quality and a smaller tolerance for defects is not cheap.

Our local has one I believe for lunch only...maybe 10:30 - 3:00 or something along those lines. It's OK. I eat there once every couple months.

Something else our KFC has is "catering carryout". You can buy all their "fixins" in very large bulk for your party. Ever had to cook mashed potatoes for 100 people? I have and never will again.

Jeff, I also have spent over 30 years in the business and have taken my share of plant tours and know a lot of processors personally. I completely agree that the animal cruelty claims are a bunch of BS. They want the chickens to be killed quickly, efficiently, and with as little labor involved as possible. I think I was misunderstood on the broken bone issue though. Several processors crack bones so there is no red center around the bone once the product is cooked. This does not happen in retail at all to my knowledge, only in foodservice. I did not mean, nor imply that this was done to live chickens. That would be outrageous and quite frankly would serve no purpose. At one time many years ago, I purchased and sold a lot of seconds and defects. At that time, EVERYONE had a lot of them. Not so much in today's world. If a processor is having a lot of defects, they are most likely not in business long.
