Same here, Greg. I powered my home built phaser (plans from Edmund Scientifics) with a Tesla coil when I was 14. Also build a sonic pistol and got grounded for a month, but that's another story. Edison is mainly to blame for Tesla's inventions and discoveries not gaining more broader exposure.

No, just big sparks! The first TC was powered by an ignition coil and wound on an Xmas wrapping paper roll. The caps were the old "door knob" style. It would make 5" sparks. I ran that thing in my bedroom producing so much ozone it almost killed me! The neighbors got pissed and called my parents because it hosed up the TV and radio reception on the block.
Later I build a 4' coil and made the caps with clear x-ray film and foil. It would spark about 1.5'.
Also had a large Van de Graaff generator with a 16" ball and a 3" belt. It would arc about 12" on a dry day.
