Well, not quite the hottest day of the year, but one giant puff of smoke, and our air conditioning compressor is now fried . No pining for the fjords, no resting, it is deceased, gone to me it's maker, it is an ex air conditioning compressor......The next few days will be so much fun Guess Deb and I are sleeping in the basement

You startled 'im! He'll be right as rain in a minute! Sorry to hear about that. They will come out to fix it during the weekend. My repair guy says weekends are the busiest part of the week because people are home all day.
Oh, bummber. I feel for you. We just replaced our ac unit also. but it is good to have a basement to be able to escape to. That is what we did also, until the new unit was installed.

No fix available, this unit is completely fried......Downstairs is a balmy 84 degrees (all fans on, all windows upstairs open), basement warming to almost 72, bedroom level, above 95.......Have not even heard back (5 hours later) as for an estimate of a replacement unit........I'm thinking it's time to find a decent hotel room for the next few days, only bad part is that in order to do so we need to be 35 miles away.

How about a small window unit in a master bedroom or living room? We did that in our first house after a hurricane. We were on a small generator for power for a little over a week. Put up some sheets as curtains to block off the unused areas.

Ohhhh Yeeaah!
Well that sucks for sure.
Why does it always happen at the worst time?
At least you have a basement. They just don't build houses with those around here.

Just had mine charged up by a friend of mine... He only charged me his cost and an hour of labor (which I insisted on). 9# of R22 and $80 labor was $600.
Good luck!

I feel SO BAD hearing this because, depending on where you live, insurance may not be 'speedy' to recover your replacement costs.
But, for what it's worth, this is one of two clients I will NEVER Forget:
Back in Feb, 2008 this person bought about $20K in electronics from me for his boat. ..Three months later he called and told me to "Repeat" the ENTIRE order plus some. --his mast was struck by lightning and EVERYTHING was FRIED! --It truly broke my heart because that's not the way I want to make money.
MANY BLESSINGS to You and Your Family in Keeping Cool in a year that's been totally unpredictable!
Blessings,
Lisa
ps: for what it's worth: My MOST "Favorite Call" was from an individual in rural "Looo-sianna" who wanted to know if the (least expensive) Fishfinder I sold would find a METEOR in "the pond, out back". He saw something land in his pond from the sky, and thought if he found it, it might be worth "Millions"! ...Forgive me for remembering one of Steven King's movies! LOL!
I vote window unit. I have central air and still use my window unit. What's the sense in cooling the whole house when I only use one bedroom. Stick that puppy on 60 and make it an icebox.
Back before global warming, when we used to get hot weather..... we found the basement was the best retreat from the heat. BUT, we kept it completely closed up. No windows open, no fans running, and the door to the upstairs was always kept closed. It would remain much cooler that way.
I would try doing that, rather than as you are currently, with windows open, etc., your just letting the cold escape that way.
Had this issue some years back and it turned out to be a compressor "hard start kit" that some technician had installed.
I returned the system to normal by eliminating the hard start kit with the oil filled caps that were intended for the system as shipped when new.

price for r22 is about $300 for 30#. but we put a huge mark up on it.
bill what wrong with your a/c is the compressor grounded, open windings or just out of refrigerant.......
It's a 15 year old unit put in by the builder (15 year old house), so at the time it was a low bidder item (Heil model# HAC042AKA-1). What is wrong, the compressor and motor are blown, the capacitor fried, and the contacts show signs of disintegration. I've checked and doubled checked these items myself. If I did not know better, I would say lightening strike, but there is no evidence of it anywhere on or near the compressors location or house wiring. Age is the culprit, one item failed and the rest was a domino effect. I'm looking at a Trane XR13 as a replacement (as it is R22 compatible) along with a new Trane XL800 thermostat.......
Bill S.
PS: Should have pricing (with professional installation) tomorrow.

He'd be pushing up daisies if his pipes weren't nailed to the house.

no blown fuses. pitting on compressor contactor, normal
is the capasitor a duel cap used for the compressor and the fan motor. does it look bloted or have oil leaking out. soundls like a bad cap <$10
the trane XR13 is a 410 unit your contractor is removing the 410 thats in it and adding the R22.
Just got off the phone with Trane customer service, they do make a XR13 R22 unit compatible replacement unit (sorry, not for sale in the state of California). Still awaiting a call from the contractor as to price installed.
Temps at night are down in the 68-72 range, with the ceiling fans going, and the $20 window fan blowing colder air on us we were actually able to sleep in out own bed last night. I do feel sorry for Debbie though, as she is stuck at the house (now that she is unemployed) this week waiting for the call as to when we can get the system replaced......
Bill S.
PS: Main AC fuse in house did not even trip, and yes, capacitor is as you stated (dual post), yet with a known good replacement, motor does not even hum, and has that wonderful "I'm toasted" smell to it.

Isn't that what cell phones and shopping malls are for?
Do you have a fused disconnect at the unit. Check those fuses. The smell are you referring to it the refrigerant or electrical smell
The smell is all electrical, freon/refrigerant has a completely different odor, and the unit is still fully charged (I can bleed at high pressure).
Bit the big one, went with a complete new XR13 system from exterior compressor/condenser unit to internal coil system. For the little amount (in my eyes) difference in pricing, and with the thought of competitive resale coming into play (identical homes, one with the original AC, one with a new system), it is the wiser decision on our part.
