Ted, too darn funny for sure. I still remember my first real girlfriend, her grandfather was a retired cop who had a snub nose magnum. I remember how calm and kind he was when he offered to take me into the other room and show me his gun. It took a good day or two before I got the 'message'. :-)
I had a girls father do that to me once. I ended up talking guns with the step-dad for quite some time and it thouroughly annoyed the girl. No great loss though as the step dad was a much nicer individual, as it turns out, than the chick!

Protecting the younger children should be part of Babysitting 101.

Killing someone may be tough mentally. I hope this boy realizes he may have had worse memories to deal with if he would have failed to protect himself and his siblings.

He was fortunate to have access and the ability to use the great equalizer.

I think we can give Lisa a break, she may not change her mind about guns but I'm sure she sees the logic in what what we've said is the real problem. We planted the seeds, now let her think about it.

Lisa, if you're willing to learn about guns, this forum can help. All you gotta do is ask. I encourage you to go and take a gun safety class, you might just end up a completely different person on this matter. And if you don't change your mind after a gun safety class, then at least you went the length to actually know them and the real issue. However I'm 99% positive after a gun class you'll change your opinion on guns and start owning one.
Thanks, and you're [ALL] 100% Correct that I do have a lot to think over and consider from the law-abiding, educated, friends on this forum.

I genuinely appreciate your POVs and truthfully never considered some of them before, simply because I was not 'brought-up' around guns.

"Education is Key" and while I know Guns don't kill people --People kill people, I guess the posts that made the most impact were the idiots, thugs, etc., who can't follow the rules of society and I'm sure, if I was in the same violent situation, I would wish I had more than a frying pan or big knife in any hopes of protecting myself!

But one 'little' caveat I just have to throw in: Just where, in the original story/post, states the 14-YO was ever "trained" or "educated" in the use of guns? ...What I read was, he "got a handgun from his parent's bedroom..."

...and while I truly understand he protected his family, it still sounds to me like access was "overly easy" for that 14-YO and My first thought, prompting my knee-jerk original post was: if he had a bit of a 'mental imbalance', it doesn't sound like much would stop him if he wanted to terrorize a high school, etc..

I AM happy all turned out well in this instance!

Anyway, I again Thank You for not being too hard on me as well as enlightening me on many things to consider. I do love ya all!! --also, thanks for the PMs, too --they've made my day!!

Many Blessings,

Lisa

Lisa I agree with you that if the kid wasn't trained and the gun wasn't safe, this isn't something to be happy about. It always comes down to the upbringing / parenting and in the case of the young man you told us about, he didn't have that. He didn't have a Dad and he didn't have people around him to make sure he hung out with the right kind of people. It's sad, but the only thing to blame in bad gun related stories is the parents.

I think there was an assumption of "training" because when the poop hits the fan, if you haven't prepared yourself mentally to deal with that, a person usually freaks out. Combine that with the fact that the 14 YO HIT the attacker, and you either have one incredibly lucky kid, or someone that is pretty level headed and prepared to protect themselves.

One of the things you will learn, if you chose to do so Lisa, is that it is more about thinking ahead and asking "what if" than anything else. Lots of people can pick up a gun and fire off some shots, but few are successful at defending themselves without proper training and mental preparedness.

Pretty much the same as if you get yourself into a fist fight. The winner in either instance is not neccessarily the one with the bigger weapons, but the one that is tactful and mentally prepared to use them.

Lisa, in your grittiest voice repeat after me:

I know what you're thinking. Did I shoot 6 rounds or did I shoot 5? Before you answer, I want you to know that this is a 44, the most powerful handgun in the world and it will blow your head clean off.....so do you feel lucky......punk.......well do ya?

Just over a year ago, we had nothing to do with guns. We educated ourselves about them as well as our children 10 and 15yr olds. Today we have over 20 guns and each member of our family has their favorites. Not only has it matured our children but it has given us a great hobby. Today, i honestly feel you are doing wrong if you dont teach your children gun safety and get them involved. Both our kids LOVE guns, but respect them. I am always proud when i see my 10yr old handle a gun. He is very confident and most importantly SAFE! The last gun fair we went to, the shooting instructors were amazed at his skill set and handling. He is just a little guy but handles 44magnums and 45acp autos like a pro.

So today we have something that gets my son away from video games, gives him confidence, gives our family something great to do together AND gives us protection. Thats key... remember you can always take guns away from law abiding americans, but you can never take the guns away from criminals.

Kudos to him and his family. True as anyone would tell you, shoot to kill to avoid lawsuits. But hopefully they will get through this!

Cory, correct me if I'm wrong but that is a Colt Python that chick is holding. I have one in the cabinet and it is quite honestly the sweetest shooting gun I own. The particular one I have was built by a gun smith back east for comp use. There is just nothing like a really well put together gun...well except for maybe a really well put together car...or maybe a really well put together woman...ok,ok but it IS a really nice gun, and getting more valuable.

BTW the quote is, IIRC..."I know what-chur thinking. Yer thinking was it six shots,or only five? Well being this is a 44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and will blow your head CLEAN OFF...you should ask yerself a question. Do I feel lucky?...Well...do ya PUNK!?!"

Love Dirty Harry, but man are those movies dated. Haven't seen one of those in YEARS. Maybe even decades.

Cory, Do you think if I print this off and tape it on my entry doors it will give a better impression than the BARK of my new 115lb (St. Bernard/mixed-breed) dog??

ok, Ok, OK, I'm Sold --enough said-- and I will take Training Classes! But how much does a gun like that cost? I also have to consider the cost of feeding My Dog, as well!

A training class will cost about $200 for the whole day and will be a great experience. A gun can cost $300 and up, but plan on spending 700-900 for a quality piece. You will own it forever and its a great investment.

Not sure where you live but you can find many quality firearms under $700. Springfields XD line and S&W's M&P line start under $500 and both are good quality weapons.

Lisa,

If you do end up taking a training and safety class, my opinion is to learn on a full size firearm and not one of the subcompacts. They are easier to handle and get used to for a first time shooter.

Mike

see, you live in TX we live in CA. You have to throw in the fact we also have to pay for child safety lock, background checks, locking case and the additional California punishment taxes for buying a gun. Heck we cant even buy certain color guns and we are not allowed to have more then 10 rounds in our magazines. Oh yea, AR's ??? Yea, we are not even allowed to have magazine releases!!! You need to use a tool to release your magazine!!!

Lisa, what would you want to do with a gun? If you only want it for home defense and target practice, there are classes for that. If you want or might be interested in going hunting, there are classes for that. Make sure you pick a class that suits your application. A general gun safety class won't teach you some of the stuff seen in a hunting safety class. Like how to hunt birds in groups of 2 or more.

Although I respect the True Art of Hunting, I'd be most interested in the self-defense aspect.

Otherwise, every night about this time, for hours-on-end, my 2.5 YO dog (who I got from the ASPCA on May 4th and have Nursed back to health[many posts]) now Howls/BARKS at the top of her lungs for no reason during the early PM hours. --I'm grateful I don't own a gun because she's driving me NUTS! --but I can also assure you, that no one, in their 'right mind' would try to break into this house about now!!

I didn't realize you guys had so many rules. We only have one of those, the background check. The rest is optional but you are responcible for the firearm if a minor gets it in their hands.

Mike, California is one of the most ridiculous states when it comes to firearms. I mean they passed a law forbidding open carry (unloaded) because it was too intimidating for others.

Thank to the West Hollywood shooting and the Sacramento shooting, law abiding citizens are punished. But if you go to Oakland or LA....you can get AK's with 100 round magazines out the back of a trunk.

Idiots.

the Protection poster with the lady pointing the big bore brings back memories. I have four children; three grown and one still at home. All were raised around guns, to respect them, and taught to handle them safely and shoot them.

When my oldest daughter was 12, she asked to go to the run range with me and some other male co-workers on our day off work. She was already a safe and proficient shooter at 12 yrs old. We were at the outdoor pistol range, with earth berm back drop, and railroad ties to place the target of your choice, which was usually empty soda cans. However I had picked up some empty 12 gauge hulls and stood them on the railroad ties. She took my 8" .41 mag and stepped up to the line. This is a 3.5 lb gun with a 80 lb 12 yr old girl. Her first shot hit the empty 12 ga hull at 25 yards, with significant recoil and muzzle blast. Everyone else stopped shooting to watch her, and asked "what in the world is she shooting, with that much recoil?". She then cleaned the remaining 12 ga hulls from the railroad tie, emptied the .41 of cases, laid it on the table and sat down. You coulda heard a pin drop!

Later, she married into a family of hunters (I hunt too). One Christmas morning, her brother-in-law got a new .357 snubbie for Christmas. Her husband and brother-in-law were shooting the .357 in the back yard (they live in the country!) while she was watching from the kitchen while drinking her coffee. They weren't hitting their targets very well. She walked outside, said "give me the gun" then proceeded to show them up by putting a tight group on the target.

Yep, she makes me proud!

I would encourage everyone to have a look at cornered cat.

http://corneredcat.com/

for those with childrens :-)

http://corneredcat.com/Childproof_Isnt/

It has the best section on gun safety and training for children I have ever seen. It is geared towards women and parents.
