Unemployed now 13 months. Funds saved for my next Roadster build about gone. Guess I'll list everything I've bought to date for sale next month and move on.
It was fun while it lasted.

Is the car going to be worth more finished than the parts?
Businesses are shedding their older employees. Not only can they get kids to work for way less than they pay us, they're also looking at the actuary tables. We're going to hit their health insurance.
Rilla and I are firmly convinced that's what made Cessna select her for downsizing, one of the higher paid employees nearing 60.
Bill, what's SpaceX doing? Anything nearby? Of course, there's that age thing again. They don't want to hire someone who's within a few years of retirement.

Have you thought of hiring yourself out as a consultant? Way back when SGI/Cray downsized me (I trained the replacement in India ) out of a job I went to work for my old customers as a consultant when dealing with SGI/Cray (all well within the scope of my exit contract with SGI/Cray). I guided them into making the right decisions equipment and support wise, saved them money, word got out that I was acting as a consultant, and work came my way for several years (enough to support my family and still allow me a toy or two).
Again, just a thought as you really have to think out of the box (and out of your industry comfort zone) if you want to get hired (at your age ).

Get the hell out of California. Sell the house and go somewhere it is cheaper to live. Kathy and I have been saving up for years, littel by little to retire in the South somewhere. Our little house up here is almost paid for and we are looking to move to to South Carolina. We don;t plan on having a huge expensive house to retire to. just something small and sustainable on what we have saved up. BTW my Roadster is over 10 years old now.....I'm certainly not rich but I haven't sold her yet.

East TN is a good place to be. VW, Wacker, TVA, and Amazon are all hiring at a pretty good rate. The pay might not be as high as you are used to but cost of living is considerably lower than Cali and we dont have a state income tax. For example I bought a 2500sq ft house in a small golf course community 200yds from the river for $90,000.

why not just build the whole car from scratch. you build furniture, and from the pictures ,your stuff looks pretty good to me, making some thing from steel is the same thing, just take your time, it's not rocket science, after all , every kit cobra company out there built their first one from scratch. now git out there and find some 4" od, .120 wall tube for the main rails and get started
