Don't feel bad. My first car was a '68 Impala SS with a 327 and maybe 300 HP.
I just bought a Hyundai Genesis R Spec. A 4 door family car with all the bells and whistles. But it's pushing 429 HP out of a N/A 5.0, 0-60 in under 5 sec and 1/4 mile in 13. I remember old muscle cars trying to be that fast.
Times have changed.

I know what you mean. My '12 Chrysler mini van has 283 hp and runs a high 14 sec quarter mile. That's like early '70 muscle car times. And it gets 27-29 mpg at 75.

Just wait until direct gas injection becomes more prevelent. Supposed to happen in the Vette in 2013-14, and is already in the eco boost Fords. Yall ain't seen nothing yet!
dont forget those HP numbers are at stupid RPM ranges as well as low torque ratings. I am sick of hearing rice rockets go down the street with their fart pipes blaring sounding like they are going 90mph when in reality they are going 20.
Be american, buy american.

LOL...I took FANGS out today in the 95 degree morning weather. I was lucky enough to get stuck behind some kid that slammed a Toyota Tacoma. Had the 4 Cyl with the Sewer pipe exhaust. He went to pass a dump truck going up hill. I didn't think he was going to make it up the hill himself. The truck had no balls. I went around the dump truck AND the pickup. Put that Tacoma DOWN. Too bad as the truck had a sweet paint job and looked nicely done. Just no power.

Been dusting folks in my 03' Toyota Sienna minivan w/ 230hp for almost 10 years now! Talk about a sleeper. Very easy to burn rubber off the line. It's called T-E-C-H-N-O-L-O-G-Y. he,he,he,he,...LOL!
How is Direct Gas Injection different than the fuel injection we have today?
Direct injection works like diesel direct injection except with gasoline. The gas is highly pressurized and then injected AFTER, or nearly after, the compression stroke has taken place. This means not only can the fuel be sprayed in an efficient manor to develop flame propogation optimally, but because there is no fuel taking up space in the charge that is being drawn into the cylinder, more oxygen can be drawn in for every intake stroke. This increases efficiencies AND power output...substantially. Not a real easy or generally safe thing to do though, as gasoline self detonates at a much lower pressure than diesel, so some rather complex pumps and controllers are needed to make it work right. It usually also benefits quite a bit from incorporating a hemi, multi valve, design head.
This link is pretty interesting. Look at some of the 0-60 times of old muscle cars compared to SUVs today. Example: 1980 Mustang Cobra 0-60 in 11.2 seconds. Even some of the 60's muscle cars were not too impressive compared to what you can get from a Honda today.

My daily driver is a 2012 Optima SX turbo. That 278 HP is out of a 2-liter engine... 122 cubic inches. That's 2.28 HP/cubic inch. Torque isn't bad, either, at 269 foot-pounds. All this and 29 MPG average (for me) on 87 octane gas.
And I remember when 1 HP/CI was hot stuff! Guess I'm getting old, too.

278 out of 2.0 is nice! Most sport bikes cant match that.
Just for a little perspective, the LMP1 cars that had an AER turbo engine based upon either a 2 liter or 2.2 liter Nissan engine(can't remember off the top of my head) produced in excess of 800 HP! That's 6.5+ HP/CI.
