His "fiancee" Cynthia Kelly was a juror in King's lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles in 1994

King was awarded $3.8 million in damages.

Surprised it took this long. Neither his addictions, "friends", and issues with the law, he was not a recipe for a long and decent life.

After the officers involved were found not guilty, LA exploded into riots where residents looted their own neighborhood stores, burned businesses and a group of Crips dragged an unsuspecting white truck driver named Reginald Denny out if his rig and beat him because he was white.

Rodney King won a settlement against LAPD and went on to have further run ins with police.

Regardless of stupid behavior which proceeded his getting pulled over he did not deserve to get beaten almost to death. No one should be above the law-- law enforcement in particular.

That said he had a history of drug and alcohol abuse... kind of surprised he made it to 47.

I'd like to see the whole tape, not just what the media allowed us to see, before I convict anyone. If Rodney wasn't a bum before the incident maybe I would give him the benefit of the doubt, but given his past, and only half a tape, I would never jump to conclusions.

I'll try to find it. I saw it awhile back and it shows what happened to lead the police to do what they did. It wasn't just an out of the blue beat down. He was eluding police. then became confrontational and if I remember correctly the verbal abuse and touching a female officer is what lead to the officers doing what they did. Was it wrong, yes......but it is what it is.

yeah, what Steven K said, at the time I did not live in Los Angles and I didn't follow this story closely, but I was told the media only showed the part where the cops kept pounding him, the first part showed him repeatedly getting up, attacking the cops again and again and again. I heard he was on some sort of PCP or something and was a very strong, big man.

not making any excuses for excessive force, just saying that as usual people's perceptions are skewed because the media shows only what's most entertaining. the eventual end result was riots in LA.

if the whole tape was shown I am sure things would have been different.

Cory, I would be seriously impressed if you could find the whole video somewhere, and I'd love to see it. I'm not a big current events guy, but have wondered about this one for many years.

There's no more video than what's already been seen. It's a myth, urban legend. It hasn't been seen by anyone and will never be "found" because it simply doesn't exist.

Many have driven over the speed limit but fortunately that wasn't the outcome. The cops in the video should have all served time. Bums.

The proof is in the puddin' If the video is validation for him being beaten like that PLEASE post the "entire" video. Pretty Please!

The senseless beating of an innocent Reginald Denny was more of a tragedy than what happened to Rodney King who was a victim of his own moral ineptitude.

The initial story that aired showed King resisting and throwing the officers off of him along with other confrontational actions by King. But despite what the media spin was on this incident, King brought it on to himself by not complying with officers who believed that he was high on PCP based on his behavior. Five hours after the incident, Kings BAC was 0.19. The pursuit began when 2 Officers witnessed Kings car speeding and attempted to pull King over. King believing that a DUI would violate his probation then lead police on a high speed chase until he was finally cornered by other officers.

I guess it was the LEO's fault for giving chase to King......you know because the system was at fault here. Had King not feared violating his parole by drunk driving, he may of pulled over and complied with the officers......right?????

But it doesn't matter, the officers were found not guilty of using excessive force and another acquitted.

These officers and all officers deal with scum bags like Rodney King. The barbaric riots and looting that ensued is testimony to that fact.

I'm not sure what you mean by validation as the beating was excessive in that it went on too long even if it was provoked.

Only two of the officers served 32 months in jail and their delaying taking King to the hospital and falsifying time logs to cover that up played a role in the second trial. The 8 other officers on the scene have not served any time. 2 of them were acquitted twice.

There was far more than speeding involved. King's BAC was estimated to be 0.19 (it was measured 5 hours later) and King was desperate not to get caught because he was on probation for robbery and a DUI would be a probation violation.

After the high speed chase, there was a 9 minute confrontation between the police and King during which King broke free of the officers several times (at one point he was pinned by 4 officers and threw them off) and was tazered several times with no apparent effect. George Holliday filmed exactly 81 seconds of footage beginning with King charging officer Laurence Powell. Local station KTLA edited out the first 13 seconds which among other things shows King charging officer and aired the last 68 seconds. They also provided the edited footage to the national press. So yes, there is 13 seconds that both juries saw that the public did not see. There was also ~8 minutes that was not filmed.

The existence of the missing 13 seconds of video is well documented.

"In the aftermath of the acquittal of the four Los Angeles police officers by the Los Angeles County Superior Court, the United States federal government, through the United States District Court for the Central District of California, stepped in and held a federal trial for civil rights violations, ending with two of the police officers who took part in the incident being found guilty and subsequently sent to prison, and with the other two police officers acquitted."

Rodney King - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SO in fact, prison time was served. Also remember King precipitated the events by NOT COMPLYING. And by resisting arrest. His two passengers complied and were not beaten.
