Finally gave in to my dislike for ground level patio's. Building a 400 sq ft deck outside the kitchen and leading across and toward the pool. I am going to use composite decking for the first time. Going with Fiberon in an Ipe color with Rosewood picture framing. There will be a couple integrated benches and a big privacy screen on the far end to block from the neighbor's pool area. Some framing pics (waiting for decking order to be delivered). Some other gallery shots of the decking that will go on it.
I'm going to build lattice from scratch for the screen. Still gathering designs if anyone has suggestions. The screen will be the trim color so it will be painted....trying to decide what kind of wood to build in. Cedar won't take paint well. Considering ripping up PT lumber but it's not the nicest grade if I'm using some full dimensional stuff as well.

They sell a vinyl lattice in this area and I have used it in a number of places. The only problem I have had to date is that it does not like to be bolted/screwed down solidly. Expansion and contraction with the change of seasons causes it to break at the mounting points. So the latest installation is using channels that the latice sits in and is allowed to float. So far so good.

One of our friends did their privacy screen with bamboo in a cedar frame, very unusual & aestheic. I think he sealed it all with a marine varnish.
No need to stain & the frame can be unscrewed to add new pieces if any get damaged etc.
The wooden lattice I used deteriorated quickly, the subsequent plastic lattice replacement picks up all the black crap from the trees & odd spots of algae so I have to power wash it.
Good luck it looks impressive.
Wish they had the composite decking when I built mine 20 years ago. The Cedar has held up reasonably well, but I dread stripping and re-staining it. My suggestion is some kind of synthetic wood for all of the finished surfaces (decking, railing, steps, privacy screening, etc). Real wood is fine for structural posts and joists, but still needs to be treated.

Licensed 4/24/13!! Wahoo!
I can offer one suggestion, you may want to rethink having a multi-level deck. Two things happen, first, you create two smaller decks and lose floor space and utility. Second problem, you have created a tripping hazzard for no real reason other than aesthetics.

If you aren't careful you are building yourself a critter apartment complex. What are you doing in the front to keep them from digging under the front board and having a nice dark. dirt free nesting area between the boards on the old patio?
An update on the project. I'm really liking the Fiberon. Very nice to work with, cuts beautifully. Just have the privacy screen to do....as well as came up one deck board short so have to order that.

Randy, I have a decent size GC company but still get my hands dirty. Me and two of my carpenters built this. It took us almost 2 months. I sub-contracted the footing concrete work, stone work, roof, exposed aggregate patio, gutters and gable vinyl. I framed the whole structure, installed decking & railings, and put up ridiculous amount of azek pvc trim. The lower level even has a coffered ceiling. This job was 100k.
It's weird, the decking and border are the same colors as Chucks deck. I just put a double boarder instead of one board.

Getting close to done. Fascia is stained and privacy screen built. Did custom lattice out of strips ripped from cedar 2x6's. Rafters will have small laterals on top at some point for a bit of extra detail.
