Things to do in the Belton / Austin, TX area

Going to be in Belton the weekend of 5/18.

Any suggestions of what to do?

Any demo derbies?

I don't know about any demolition derbies, but what do you like?

If you like the live music / bar scene, 6th Street in downtown Austin is always hopping, especially on Fri/Sat nights. There is always some great live music.

If you want some really good Texas BBQ, then head to the Kreuz Market, or Blacks BBQ in Lockhart, Texas. You'll be glad you did!

Black's Barbecue :: Home

Welcome to KreuzMarket.com!

If you want a really cool place to eat with a beautiful view, then head over to the Oasis Restaurant overlooking Lake Travis. They have a HUGE outside multi-level deck that looks over Lake Travis. It's a really nice place, especially at sunset. Get there a little early because it's quiet popular.

The OASIS Restaurant- Sunset Capital of Texas

If you have access to a motorcycle, sports car or just want to see some nice countryside, head out to the hill country and check it out.

Motorcycle Riding in the Texas Hill Country

While you're in the hill country, you could always head over to Luckenbach, Texas just so you can say that you've been there.. You probably won't find Waylon, Willie and the boys there though.

Home

Fredericksburg, Texas is a nice place to visit and is also popular. While there looking through all the antique shops, restaurants, etc. you could check out the National Museum of the Pacific War.

The National Museum of the Pacific War

If you want to check out a nice car museum, I've heard Dick's Classic Car Museum is a good one. I've never been though..

Classic Car Museum Dick's Classic Garage San Marcos Texas Antique Vintage Auto Facility Rental

From Belton, Round Rock, Texas is really close. Do you like baseball? They have a minor league baseball team, Round Rock Express (Nolan Ryan's Team). I believe they will be at HOME during that weekend.

You could go climb Enchanted Rock if you have a few hours and are in decent physical shape. It's a pretty easy hike..

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/f...nchanted_rock/

If you like water activities, tubing down the Guadalupe River is popular. There are several companies operating down there, so do a Google search for other options.

http://www.riversportstubes.com/

If you make it up as far as Waco, Texas, you could check out the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame Law Enforcement Museum.

http://www.texasranger.org/

So there's a few ideas.. If there's something else you have in mind let me know and I'll rack my brain for a few more ideas.. If you want to drive up here to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area I can come up with some other ideas too..

Take a tour of the Capital building and there is the Bob Bullock museum The Story of Texas

Bob Bullock was a Lt Gov of TX and the museum is named after him. The museum is reasonably new. My kids when in 4th grade each had a field trip to Austin and they both said the museum is pretty cool. i haven't been but if a 4th grade kid thinks it is half way cool there might be something worth seeing there.

I know both of those are more TX / Texan centric but throwing those out there if you are into those sort of things.

Also thinking of going up to the Dallas Fairgrounds to see the figure eight races. Anything else to do to make a day of it up there?

You had me going there for a few minutes, because I had never heard of the figure 8 races. Are you talking about the Dallas County Fairgrounds Figure 8 races in:

IOWA?

I don't know about dirt tracks down near Belton, but we have dirt track races about 10 miles from me in Kennedale, TX.

Looks like they will be racing on the 19th..

If you are coming down to Austin, let me know. I'll try to get the guys in the Austin Cobra Club together for a dinner or something. If it's a weekend maybe we put a cruise to the Hill Country together. PM me on your plans.

The Hula Hut on the lake is good, too. Lots of water-side seating. Also don't miss Weirdo's. Just a fun place with great food and lots of stuff going on.

We were there for a friend's wedding a couple of weeks ago. Always lots to do around there. The State Capitol is beautiful, too. Leave your pocket knife, etc, in the car. You have to go airport security to get in. Don't blame 'em. I got my "You can all go to hell, and I will go to Texas" plaque in the capitol's gift shop. That's a quote from Davy Crockett. I like his attitude.

Seagull, While I would enjoy seeing cars and meeting the folks from other areas, I will be visiting with my son and I know he wouldn't be up for that, so I am going to have to take a pass.
