Just wondering. I am bored shipless, (get it) just sitting around the house while I am healing up. So I bought this 1947 Chris Craft wooden boat model about 7 years ago. Never built it. Thinking about doing it now for something to do. It is 24" long 9" beam, plank on frame construction.
Think it is doable on the dining room table sort of thing? I don;t have a bunch of the small wooden boat modeling tools, but figure I have enough large stuff to fudge my way through. Like I have a Dremel with all the attachments. I have a smaller sander disk, Xacto knives, etc
I just need to get the correct glues, paints and such.
So anyone ever build a big boat model? Pics?
I have the Dumas model of a Chris-Craft "Barrelback" that I've been building off-and-on (mostly "off") for two years. Hopefully will finish this summer...
We have a huge contingent of the older classic boats up here on the Big Lake in NH. Garwoods, Chris Crafts, race boats and hydroplanes. Hey, at least I would have an RC version, seeing as I can't afford to have a real one....

I built one of those wooden sailing ship models a number of years ago. Really enjoyed it and hope to do another larger one sometime.
I say go for it.

Paul,
I built a CR914 sailboat over the winter and have sailed it a couple of times. It will be on the lake this summer. Not that I'm too old for a real sailboat
You have the time so get it started and see how it goes.
Of course we need progress pictures.

I started cruising the model boat forums and picked up some good tips. I also plan to head to Hobby town down in Manchester, NH to pick up a masters tool kit, and some different glues that I will need. I ordered some plank clamps, a plank bender, and some other odds and ends. So hope to start by the end of the week on the frames and sub planking. Mmmmm.....glue!
Right now I am concentrating on walking and building up my Heart beats per minute so I can get driving.

For what it's worth, I found the plank benders to be worthless.
Just soak them until they soften up enough to conform to the hull.
YMMV.

Well I just ordered one of the soldering iron style benders. The problem with wetting them is you then need to wait for them all to dry before glueing. The soldering iron style eliminates the wait a little more. I'll have to do it trial and error. Never done it before except a bit of RC plane stuff back when I was about 12 years old.

I concur. Use rubber bands where you can and/or use brads where the bands don't work. Clamps just don't work. The nice thing about these models is they're pretty forgiving and you learn a lot as you go. You make a mistake, just do it over until you get it right. Good hobby shops have plenty of spare planks for those models.
That's a great hobby! Funny you mention that model. I've had one very similar to that and still in the box since 1989. Just never got around to it but I still intend to. That same year I put about 600 hours into a model of Bluenose II which I built after going on board during Op-Sail/ Statue of Liberty Commemoration in NY City in '85. Our Canadian neighbors know this as their country's official tall ship. I still have it in a glass case. The rigging is fully operational.
