Don't know how I missed this one when it was first posted - It - literally - brought back memories.
The firing range at the Winchester factory in New Haven, CT - I haven't been there in almost 60 years but, it brought back memories of going there with my dad.
There a number of car-related smells that, again, harken back to my mis-spent youth.
I appreciate /enjoy all the various perfumes and treatments that my wife employs but, there's only ONE that produces a "Phernome Response" - that is, Fendi. It seems to go right to my brain stem (or some other nether region).
Here's a link to some good (light semi-scientific) info about smell and memory:
i like the smell of..... um... not exactly sure what's happening, but it's the smell of an electric motor. usually a new one, like on a power drill. it smells like toy trains and AFX / Tyco slot cars. it may have something to do with burnt air from the little sparks inside the engine.
i actually like the smell of skunk, if it's mild... fresh roadkill is awful, but if you get a small wiff of it in the car when driving down the road i like it. here in california we often times have skunk vines on the feeway block walls, they really smell like skunk.
i love the smell of new things out of the box.. the plastic, the resins, the packaging.
check out this company called "Mandles" - they have leather scented candles, wood shop, and even stripper's breath!

Well I have to say, I would never have expected that from you. I know exactly the 'electric' smell, my battery drill gives it off, and I too like the mild smell of skunk. I also like the smell of differential oil.
So many that others have already mentioned. But these would have to be at the top of my list:
Pine trees in the forest while camping, particularly in the early morning.
Camp fires in the forest. Not too strong, but more distant.
Freshly turned soil.
A rainstorm. Even more, the smell just before a rainstorm.
The smell of cut lumber in a wood working shop. Pine, oak, cedar, poplar. Any and all of it.
Lilacs in the spring.
New carpet. We just had carpet installed in our family room. I love laying on the floor and taking a deep breath. Told my wife if I could afford it, we would lay new carpet in one room of the house every year just so I could enjoy the smell.
A new book. My wife bought me a Kindle. It is convenient, but I miss the smell of a new book.

That's because all the young asian ladies are raving (sp on purpose) at you and saying, "Fi Dorra, Make You Horra"
Hahahaha, NOPE. Actually, the first time I was there the "available" young ladies were mostly Korean. The second time, mostly from South America. The third and last time, it was almost exclusively Russian and Cuban cuties. I was in an MI Battalion and lost several of my best guys because they fell in love/lust with a Russian girl and lost their TS-SCI. Without a clearance I couldn't use them, love is a powerful thing.
FYI, most of the country is covered with poop and water! Night soil is or was in 2001 used by farmers. Korea is a wild place to drive. Many times you would have only one lane open on overpasses out in the country because one lane is covered with peppers drying on tarps. When I left Korea the last time I tossed almost all of my clothing and didn't even ship much home. I was tired of the smell.
I will confess there was a place in the ville that had BBQ meats that could steal your soul.
I remember the smell of my grandfather's greenhouse. The musty smell of tomatoes.

Fresh Hot Asphalt. Ozone as well. Hoppe's #9 and gunpowder, my dad's workshops ALWAYS smell like Hoppe's and gunpowder, he's a very avid reloader. Victoria's Secret pear lotion, don't think that's sold anymore, my ex used to wear it and it's very nice. And I grew up going to Lernerville Speedway in Sarver PA, there's something distinctive about the smell of dirt car exhaust, rubber, oil, and wet clay. Awesome.

Eddie you may like Pierre SD.
Quote:
PIERRE, SD -
The city of Pierre has an unusual request for residents: Please don't put dead skunks in the garbage.
South Dakota's capital city has been dealing with an influx of skunks as hot weather drives the critters in search of food and water, leading to a waiting list for city traps. City Commissioner Jamie Huizenga says many residents are killing skunks themselves on their property and dumping the carcasses in garbage that gets hauled to the city's baling facility.
Huizenga says that has led to an odorous problem for the workers at the baling facility. He says property owners who take care of skunks themselves can take the carcasses to the baling facility and drop them off separately, "no questions asked."

1. The smell of fresh meat lovers pizza, filling my car, as I hurry home to dinner!
2. The smell of a freshly bathed newborn baby.
3. The smell of fresh coffee beans in bags on the front seat, as I drive home.
4. The smell of fresh Carnuba wax on my Mk II Roadster
5. The smell of leather and wood in a new sports car.
6. The smell of a good steak on the grill (over charcoal).
7. The smell of good, fall-off-the-bone baby back BBQ ribs when served up.
8. Shalimar perfume on my wife.
9. The smell of aromatic hickory and/or apple wood burning in a wood stove.
10. The smell of bacon and eggs over a campfire, first thing in the morning.
There are plenty of smells that I like, but I would have to say that the nape of my womans neck and a race track are two that are very high on my list. Preferrable when both of them are under "heavy use".
Here's a couple:
* electric smell before a storm hits - usually smelled when hiking or camping
* wet pine burning (see former point)
* wet dog - reminds me of camping with long dead mutts that I've lived with.
* Smell of hot oil when machining something
* Oddly - sour milk.... it reminds me of when my kids were babies and under the weather
* saddle soap or glove oil
* shoe black - reminds me of being a little guy and hanging out with my dad when he polished his shoes
* old spice - see above
20 years ago I was working at a Nestles plant in the Northlands of the UK, and one of the offices was 100+ years old - and it was all dark oak and mahogany. The smell of a century of chocolate making soaked into fine wood was AMAZING.
Nothing can bring me back to a distant memory faster than the right smell - not a song, not seeing someone...... the right smell brings the memories flooding back!
my one azalea in my yard smell reminds me of the old days of good skunkweed

I lost my cense of smell some years ago and the doctors never found the cause but when I was a wee lad I lived in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Lake Tahoe and remember when it would first start to rain the dust would be washed out of the air and the moist red clay would give off the most wonderful smell. Thanks for reminding me of all the things I had not thought about enjoying the smell of for years. It is almost as good as really smelling them now.
