I need to make granite cheese trays. ...and since you guys know everything,

Hi all,

I have some 3/4" thick granite tiles left over from our counter top remodel and Julie wants to give cheese trays as supplemental Christmas gifts this year. I'm in charge of making them and they need to look something like this:

Questions,

How do I get them to roughly the right shape? Trying not to rent a tile saw.
How do I get the haphazard type edge?
What, if anything, do they need to be sealed with? (normal granite sealer?)

Thanks!

R

Randy, You can rough out the shape using a chipping hammer http://www.tools-plus.com/estwing-e3-wc.html and then clean up the edges with polishing attachments that attach to your angle grinder like these:

http://store.graniteearth.com/handtools.html

Several years ago I did the same thing, but my wife wanted rectangular pieces with finished edges. I used a stone cutting attachment for my 4 1/2" grinder and cut them by hand and then finished them with the polishers shown in the second link above. I was amazed at how good they came out with little experience.

How did Julie know that a granite serving tray is EXACTLY what Wendie wants for Christmas. You guys are awesome!

Thanks Mark. Trying not to buy a bunch of expensive tools but it looks like the chipping hammer is something I'll go pick up. BTW, If I have one tile and want to make three platters from it, what you would your method to get it into three pieces initially?

@ Steve. Let's see how I do, that's not out of the realm of possibility!

Be careful what you use for a sealer. Not all sealers are food safe. I would think the sealers used on most kitchen counters would be safe, but be sure to let it dry completely, buff it, then let it harden for a day or two before putting food on it.

A diamond blade in a circular saw would probably cut the granite if you use water for a lubricant. Just be careful with the water and electric saw.....
I've also seen diamond blades for 4 1/2" grinders at Home Depot and Lowes and those should cut the granite.

Try a brick chisel. It shouldn't cost too much and it might let you do a somewhat regged edge. I'll see if I have one to take a picture of.

Here is picture:

Man...you guys have it too easy. If I tried to give my wife a broken piece of scrap granite for Christmas, I'd be using the thing as a suppository within minutes....

Sealer??

We have a lot of granite throughout the house and have never used a sealer on it
But it's all dark but even our neighbor didn't seal his lighter granite either
We just wipe it down with a regular counter cleaner whatever is on sale and have been for 6 years now
We cut on it, spill red wine on it and dump very hot out of the oven cooking pans etc on it.
I did my daughters kitchen revamp in the blue grey stuff and had a hell of time cutting it straight even with the saw rental because it's not steady enough to do a full 24inch cut and the stuff weighs a lot.

BUT now I know what to do with all the pieces I have laying around.
