If you're a zoo kind of guy, the San Diego Zoo is pretty cool and one of the best in the country.

http://www.sandiegozoo.org/

The Air and Space Museum is pretty cool.

http://www.aerospacemuseum.org/collections/

It used to be REALLY REALLY cool until they had a fire, but it's still pretty fun to walk through.

There's suppose to be some sort of Automotive Museum in Balboa Park too, but I haven't been to it yet.

I also enjoyed driving out to Point Loma and checking out the Cabrillo National Monument (light house).

http://www.nps.gov/cabr/

From Point Loma you get a view of San Diego from the west side of the bay which is pretty cool.

There's also Old Town, but it's been years since I went there..

There can be really good swells this time of year. Go surfing! There are also some outstanding golf courses in the area. Torre Pines is fantastic! Go to Tijuana (sp?) and get some Cuban cigars. That is a place like no other!

The zoo. Then go for a drive to La Jolla and see the sea lions on the beach.

Forget Tijuana. They're chopping people's heads off down there right now, and when they're not doing that it's a smelly dump.

SD is pretty diverse. There is so much to do and see compared to almost anywhere else that you may have to be a little more detailed in what you'd like to experience. California Missions or Porn productions? Mexican food or california fusion or persian? Car shows? What years? Aircraft musiums? Tall boats? Winerys? Da Bat cave? Golf courses? Surfing? Sailing? Sea World, the Zoo, or the Wild Animal Park are well thought of as is the Scripps aquarium and Balboa Park. There is world class Jazz in the area at Anthem and all sorts of other venues like Humphries by the bay Sunday brunch and many others. There are several local brewerys which in some cases include pretty good to fine restaurants. If there is a Chargers game you could probably get tickets cheap-) Northern Mexico and TJ are currently in a drug war with over 200 killed within the last couple of months so I'd avoid eating in expensive restaurants there to keep from being part of a Godfather production. The Field is a great Irish pub in the Gaslamp district, with good food and live music.

In Old Town, there's a great state historic park and the food's really good at the Old Town Mexican Cafe or across the street at Fred's.

You're also not too far from Thunder Ranch in El Cajon, where they make, erm, kit cars (Porsche and Ferrari replicas).

... and the Poinsettia Bowl will be at the "Q" on Dec. 23!

The Bali Hai is a great Polynesian restaurant out on Shelter Island-- it's been there for fifty years.

That Automotive Museum in Balboa Park is worth a visit:

http://www.sdautomuseum.org

I still miss Boom Trenchard's Flare Path! Anyone remember that place?

All of the above are great. Many of the attractions are at Balboa park ... check it out at http://www.balboapark.org/. I'd also recommend the "old town" area http://www.oldtownsandiego.org/. Lots of nice shops and restaurants as well as many historic sites. Coronado Island is a treat too. Take a look at Hotel del Coronado http://www.hoteldel.com/. It's a historic hotel with grand architecture. Nice to just walk in and look, even if you won't be staying there. Good restaurant there as well. The beaches on Coronado Island are pretty nice as well.
Have fun,
Pete

totaly agree that you should avoid Tijuana...they are averaging 6 murders a day! and the leading group to fear over there is the police that will extort money from anyone they can.

i really enjoyed the Midway Aircraft Carrier tour...a lot of history on that boat! after that take a stroll up the waterfront and see the tall sailing ships. when the sun goes down, the Gas Lamp area is fun. visit a number of spots along 4th and 5th street.

Go to Old Town and get some Mexican food.

the Auto museum at Balboa park is nice.

I personally really like the San Diego Zoo a lot. we're members there and me and the kids go often.

the Hotel Del Coronado is a nationaly recognized historic building and a very nice place to have lunch at. there are a lot of shops nearby to see and the beaches at Coronado are very nice, almost white sand there.

Have fun!

Wow! Thanks guys. Since my Mom is with me I won't be hitting Cheetah's(there is one in Sarasota) or asking her to wear a nice bra to Dick's(she's 82). I would be scared she would have something from Victoria's Secret on. I don't golf or smoke cigars or surf so that's out. Air & Space Museum I've been to Houston and Florida so I'll pass.

So far I think we will try:
Old Town
Zoo
Auto Museum
La Jolla and maybe the Field and Bali Hai for food.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. If it was just me and my brother-in-law I might try Mexico but I've been there before.

I don't think I'll tell my Mom what San Diego means. If I get away I'll try to get to Cheetah's and snap a few pics.

And Massachusetts is slang for "Votes with little head"

Actually San Diego means Saint James in Spanish.

Good times

I will second the Zoo, and the Maritime Museum on the bay front is very good too. They had a cold war era Russian Sub when I was there a couple years ago.

I'll also chip in a say for the Midway. Awesome to see, even better if you've never toured a Navy Vessel. The view from the deck is amazing. Another thing the wife and I have always enjoyed is Seaport Village. It's south of the Midway along the pier and has some really neat little shops and some really good places to eat. If you like Oysters the restaurant you first encounter when going through the main entrance area is really good. Also there was a restaurant there that had a pier dining area extending out over the bay. I can't remember the name of it but it was the best fish n' chips I've ever had. It'll be tough to choose what all to do with the limited time you have but regardless you'll enjoy it I'm sure.

Thanks to all that responded. We leave in a few hours and I've printed all the suggestions out. I think we now have plenty to do in San Diego.

Even got in a nice ride last night and covered up the car when I got home.

If you can go to Julian for some locally made apple pie. Dudley's bakery. The drive is really nice too.

Pt Loma is a great place to see NAS North Island and dwontown San Diego. Gaslamp in downtown SD. Horton Plaza. Go to Mission Beach then drive north up along the coast to La Jolla. Balboa park, the museum of Man and other attractions.

Ok....I am getting homesick now........Roberto's Taco Shop.....yum
