RPM window switch for A/C compressor wiring

I bought a RPM window switch to protect my A/C compressor at high RPMs. I have a question regarding wiring. There are 4 wires to the switch. The switched power, ground, and tach input connections are self explanatory. I'm wondering how to connect the last of the four. Do I connect this last wire to a relay involving the wire going from the trinary switch to the compressor? If so, would I connect the wire from the trinary switch that goes to the compressor to pin 30, the wire from the RPM switch to pin 86, ground to pin 85, and the output to the compressor at pin 87?

Thanks for help!

If your window switch puts out a ground signal at the critical rpm, then that wire is connected to terminal 85 to activate the relay and open the normally closed connection to the compressor. Terminal 86 must have a switched source of +12V. Terminal 30 would be the input from the trinary switch to the compressor. Terminal 87A would be the normally closed output to the compressor clutch. When the critical rpm is reached, the ground signal to terminal 85 would disconnect the power from terminal 87A and stop the compressor.

Does it make any difference if I place the relay for the RPM switch in line with the ground for the trinary switch or in line with the power to the A/C compressor?

My RPM switch directions state that if the device draws more than 3 amps you need to run the switch through a relay.

The relay should be connected to the black/green power wire that also connects to the thermostat power wire to the compressor, so it disconnects the power to the compressor. I really don't think it matters if the relay is before or after the trinary switch.

Keith1 thanked this.
