My 632 HP Hilborne intake ls3 on the Dyno

Last year at SEMA I had the pleasure of meeting with Horace Mast and his team. We discussed the motor I wanted to build and agreed to work together to make it happen. These guys are top notch. They apply both science and art into building some killer power and reliability. They were really stoked about how the motor came out and recorded the dyno pulls of my motor. I just love how the Hilborne carbs look, sound, and perform. Mast have developed a fully drive by wire Hilborne setup that combines the best of the old and new school I think.

Like everything these days its all in the software and Mast Motorsports both have their own ECU and software to manage it.

I am super happy the result. I just love hearing the motor run. You will notice that the throttle is fully computer controlled during the dyno run stepping up through the rev range then back down.

Anyway I thought you guys would like to hear the motor run.

Sweet sounding engine. Why are the stacks so short?

Yep, I wondered the same thing about the short stacks. Well turns out that the runners are actually pretty long when you account for the lower cast section. Then the trumpets on top give you the ability to tune the motor.

Since I was looking for more top end Mast shortened the stacks. The trade was mid range torque for top end power.

The other thing is I need to fit those things under the rear hatch glass.

They fit fine now but if much taller they would hit the glass.

Love the stacks! That's a very cool looking shot.

Dumb question I suppose, but how do the stacks filter the air, are there little cartridges that fit inside each one?

PS: nice setup, you're posting up some great numbers!

I don't know how he is planning on doing it, but I have seen on other ITB engines where they put the filters elsewhere in the car and then make an airbox for the ITB area with the window as the top of the box. This allows good visuals and also good filtration. It would be a shame to cover up those ITBs!

Thanks for the compliments guys.

Ill have two filter setups. One is little flat filters that go on each stack. They look reasonably nice and also filter the air enough that i would be Ok tooling around town and driving to a show.

For the track I will have a full air box with dual cone high volume filters. If I have the airbox i can incorporate the mass air flow sensor and take advantage of the ECU tuning for air density and temperature.

I will definitely have some window or maybe even make the whole airbox out of clear plastic pulled over a vacuum mold.

Right now im just working on getting the thing running down the road. Hell. Id be happy to hear it run.

John

I plan to have two configurations for my intake. Open to the engine compartment for normal tooling around town and with a full airbox for track duty.

I love aerodynamics and wanted to learn about both the bellmouth intake and how close I can get the airbox to the bellmouth itakes without having a negative impact.

I found this great article written by engineers and their theories are actually backed up by testing. Lots of cool pictures even if you dont care to read the engineering facts.

Hilborne 8 stack LS3

John
Cool to see your project, I am building the same sort of motor based on the LS3 480HP "hot cam" crate. ECU I'm going with is Holley Dominator.

I am going with cable throttle instead of the DBW setup. I think I can see the electro-mechanical piece to run the throttle blades in your pic that MAST did and I am really impressed. My Dominator ECU will support DBW, but I am already close on the cable throttle setup (Lokar pedal, Morse 12 ft cable to linkage on pass rear side of the injector bodies.

At the moment I am working through the final Dominator electrical harness work and engine oil and coolant plumbing but am otherwise close to first run.

Keep up the posts.Bill

That's awesome Bill!.

Its great to see another ITB motor going into a GTM.

Mast worked with Hilborne to tune the setup to the Mast engine package and electronics. Yep there are quite a few hours if R and D in that drive by wire setup.

Please keep us up to date on your build as well.
