Pretty Cool Build

Have had the pleasure to do some work on Frank H & Steve K's build. They wanted to step up the features on their car, so we incorporated many of the C5 electronics as we could.

We modified a set of Shane & Ron's tanks to use the 04 vette fuel sender assy. Steve designed & built a really nice alum ring that welded to the rt. tank. It has the pump, regulator & sender in 1. There is just 1 fuel line out, to the filter, then fuel rail, really simple, clean, & self contained, & quiet!

The guys wanted just 1 filler in left tank, a real advantage if you realize what a pain having to fill both sides is! Nice advantage to Ron's tanks that allow this.

Also working on using the stock evap. canister system to vent tanks, will see how that works out.

We incorporated the stock instrument cluster, w/ heads up display.

Replaced the column mount with a custom piece to allow the cluster to sit as low as possible.

Need to get the body on to fit the heads-up display unit. but we think we can fit it in & make it work - will see.

Also we are using the Body & door modules to allow as many of the stock vette features as possible, including factory remote fob, with keyless entry & door poppers, and factory alarm. All dash features including all gauges & info center. Oil temp, fuel economy, range, dual trip meter, driver personalization, even factory tire press monitors. BCM controls interior light delays, daytime running lights, alarm etc.

Really gets rid of that kit-car feel & makes the car more like a real car when your behind the wheel. Now Steve has to do his magic to the dash pad to finish it off. Thanks to the guys for letting me keep their car for 3 months, its been a real challenge getting it all to work.

Ted,
Outstanding! I kept my entire donor harness in-tack, alone with every piece of electrical/electronics from the donor except the cd player with plans to transplant it all into my build. I even kept the security system antenna. My concerns right now are redoing the dash to hold the corvette cluster, and if I will have to extend the wires of the EBCM. If you find the time please continue to share your knowledge.

OF COURSE, these photos do not do the work justice! Ted out did himself with this project and to see it in person is beyond realistic belief that it could even be done. Ted is the master of auto electronics and knowing how to put an idea into reality! Simply an automotive "work of art"!

GREAT JOB TED

Looks really good Ted. Hopefully we will see more of this build as it progresses?

I didn't see any of the ABS/TM stuff in the pics. Are you guys going to try and use those units?

Also kinda surprised to see the corrugated water lines still on there. Did you guys change anything about how they attach?

Crash, no we didn't use EBCM module, although I think the system may be useful to a certain extent. The difference in vehicle dynamics & weight is a concern, but I think that basic ABS function may be attainable, & would help the GTM in a panic stop mode. Don't know how the dual master/brake balance bar would affect ABS, probably not much if close to 50-50. Traction control may work also. I think that stability control would be hard to achieve based on the difference between the Vette & GTM (weight distribution, wheelbase, corner weight, etc). Probably need to try a system at some point. I think there have been cars built using the ABS unit, anybody have any results to share?

Yeah, the guys are going to replace all corrugated lines & front coolant tank.

Steve has some neat body mods, that are almost done. Will be interesting to see how the dash mods come out also.

Would the EBCM be needed to install a traction control unit like the Racelogic unit? What would need to be installed for a traction control unit?

I believe that most aftermarket traction control systems interface with the PCM to interrupt the spark & injectors in an increasing pattern to limit power output. Not sure what is needed as far as components, but usually you need at least all 4 wheel speed sensors. Whether this unit needs the full ABS system you will have to find out.

Most factory systems use the same concepts, but probably also partially close the electronic throttle blade to regulate power even as you have your foot on the floor. They also use the traction control part of the ABS to apply slight brake pressure to either wheel that may lose traction, an electronic version of a limited slip diff.

That looks awesome!

What exhaust is that? It looks like it sits lower and more outboard than normal or is it just me?

that's damn nice. What made you opt to go to a one piece body? I like those front ducts behind the front wheels, and that radiator opening is killer.

The work that is being done on this GTM build is nothing short of amazing. Hats off to the efforts that are happening here and I do like the body design improvements.

That being said I'm going to do a just a little GTM bashing. I want to point out something that drives me crazy that nobody seems to notice or fix. It sticks out like a Giant pimple on every GTM I look at and I can't stand it. The front wheel well openings are the most awful design work I've every seen. It looks completely careless and it's not even remotely close to circular or round. Is it supposed to be round to follow the wheel? Is it designed to be egg shaped on purpose? Is it even symmetrical enough to say it's egg shaped? Is there supposed to be a kink at the top? Why is the rear opening on all cars seem more proper?

Sorry. I had to vent this. Maybe it's just me..

The one that really sticks out to me is the door/hood interface. It's fine down lower where it is supposed to be an air outlet, but up at the top of the hood, where it "blends" or doesn't, in this case, just drives me nuts!

Can't tell without the doors being on, but the first one that fixes this issue, to me, will be a saint!

I think the front WW opening may be like that to allow for droop in the front wheels.(?)

I hear ya on that one. I'm not sure why they have it shaped that way. I try to fix most of that kind of stuff on these cars, but the majority of the problem in that area is in the hood, and....being the kind of "mess" that the hood/body fit is in that whole area, by the time you get the hood twisted around so that it fits the body correctly, AND is evenly centered at the wheels (so you don't have one tire sticking 1/2" outside the hood on one side and 1/2" inside the hood on the other side)....when you close the hood, you always have a bit of flex in the whole hood as it gets latched shut. I would love to cut that "flat" area out of the arch so it matches the rest of the wheel arch, but I'm afraid that over time, whatever cutting and pasting I'd have to do to make it look right would eventually crack and break loose over time as the hood flexed when opened and closed.

I already take care of as much of that as I can by taking some of that flat spot out of the body part of the wheel arch, since there's no flexing or stress at that point on the body.......just can't bring myself to trust any kind of fix on the hood.
