LED Brake & Signal Lights

Have any of you guys building GTMs considered using LED rear lights? I don't know the dimensions of the GTM rear lights, but they don't look like anything really special/custom. 4" diameter universal tail lights (LED or traditional) seem rather common and I am assuming the GTM rear lights are 4" diameter as well.

I started thinking about this since I happened to find some that have integrated backup lights, making for a clean install. What do you think?

They look great, but haven't seen them on a car. We just need a brave soul to take the leap!

Photoshop? I would love an option for the tailights on the GTM, they are my least favorite item on the car.

I've looked everywhere and couldn't find a set that fit.

I've seen these, but didn't have a part number on them? What is the part number? I am most interested in a taillight, LED or otherwise, that is physically shorter than the 4.5" of the kit provided ones.

Assuming that they are the same diameter as the original tail lights, and that you don't mind looking at my rear cut-out and tailpipe ideas, you end up with something like this.

That looks pretty good. As far as size goes, I was hoping someone in a build could confirm the size of the GTM tail lights.

For jhilb, they are made by a company called Maxxima. Just do a search for Maxxima LED and you will find venders that sell them. I have seen them priced between $30-$50.

I found some dimensions info on another site:

3 Hole Flange Mount 3/16" dia. Hole
Bolt Pattern 5" dia.

Here is a diagram (hard to read though)....

Thanks. I will get the exact taillamp measuresments when I get home.

MarkH. I have the tail pipes like your thinking of doing, I will get a shot for you.

Cool. It makes good aesthetic sense to me to repeat the double horizontally grouped circles of the taillights in the tailpipes. What diameter exhaust tips did you end up using?

Sorry for the thread hijack.

Tips are just shy of 3", they measure 2 7/8". I will get a better straight-on shot for you over the weekend.

JMC.. here are the measurements on the tail lamps...

I measured 4.75" wide, Hella lists them as 5" wide.

2.5" deep measured from the lip where it would sit against the body, to the back. It does not include the 0.75" of lens

Hella makes these. I've used them before but don't have dimensions for them.

Unfortunately the Hella LED versions are only 4".

I've not found any 5" LED lights. I was considering making an LED plate and using that inside the same housing, but shortening the housing. Problem is, the inside of that housing is pretty complicated.

Hmmm.... Good find, it seems like that company also sells the tail lights that are used on the GTM. Based on the dimensions provided by this company and the ones for the LEDs posted above, it looks like the LEDs posted above should fit (both have an overall diameter of approx 5").

We are off somewhere.

Those lights posted directly above are not the GTM lights. They are 4" (98 mm or 3.85") LEDs made by the same company (Hella).

These are the GTM lights...

http://www.rallylights.com/detail.aspx?ID=2333

They are 5" diameter.

Unless your looking to use tail lamps smaller than originally provided, the Maxxims will not work.

Oh, I knew the lights that Shane originally posted were not the GTM lights. I went looking around the same website and found what looked to be the GTM lights (I should have made that more clear). The reason I think the LEDs above may fit is that the LEDs I posted above, according to some info I read about them, use a standard 3-hole, 5" diameter flange. If I understand it correctly, the outer ring of white LEDs, which are part of the flange, bring the overall diameter of the LED lights to 5". If that is true, then there is a good possibility that the LED lights will fit with minimal "work".

Of course, exact measurements are necessary to verify if these LEDs will fit. But the initial info seems to look promising.

That is also the way I'm reading the Maxxima product info. It appears that the central element is their basic 4" LED cluster, while the white LED flange is the same as the no-white-LED flange in this product. That would mean that the overall diameter is 5.5". If anything, the Maxxima products are too big. The current GTM taillights are listed as 125mm in the product description, but as 122.5mm in the associated diagram. At 5.5", the Maxxima taillights are 139.7mm -- which almost certainly means that they will not fit in the existing taillight recesses in the GTM bodywork.

If you were to do the body work needed to make them fit, you'd end up with something like this:

Nothing that a little Dremel tool action and Bondo action can't make work, just not by me . I think they do look nice though and will be something I will definitely consider when the time comes.

Hmm, lemme go look, I read it incorrectly then.

I cannot read that diagram but it looks like it says 5" ?

So yeah, I guess they will fit.

Are these them?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/4-Rou...3A1|240%3A1318

They look huge.

They might be. But then the dimensions don't seem to match the other data we have found for them either. But they do look huge though....

I've done some measurements of the available photos (which, of course, does not give exact dimensional results), and I'm pretty confident that when these are referred to as 4" lights, what that means is that they are designed to be installed in a 4" hole. The back of the center portion of the light installs through the 4" hole, while the white LED portion is a flange that surface mounts. If the flange bolts are on a 5" circle, then the overall diameter is somewhere between 5.5" and 6".

Yes, they are truck lights. Since the GTM lights are round, it seems like these type of LED lights are pretty much the only show in town, unless you want to fabricate your own.

Too bad these look like they won't work out without some decent amount of body work (but maybe somebody will still try). The integrated reverse lights is pretty key for a simple GTM solution but is also a PITA .

I thought I would bring this thread back to life since I stumbled across some LED tail lights that might actually fit this time. I found these being sold by a UK company here: www.cbsonline.co.uk They are not that cheap, at about $300 a pair when you take the currency conversion into account, but I think they look better than the current GTM tail/turn/reverse lights.

Both models have an overall diameter of 122mm (the GTM lights made by Hella have an overall diameter of 122.5mm) so adapting them to fit should not be that difficult. The one on the right (with the oval center) is available with the center as white (for reverse) or amber (for turn). I believe the one on the left has the same options but it was not specifically mentioned in the description on the site.

So what do you think?

New LED Tail Lights

I'm reviving the thread again. I have spent many long hours looking for the right tail lights. I was going to go with the Nissan GT-R LED tail lights, but they are near impossible to get and very pricey ($400 each side), not to mention the body work to make them look right. In the end I have found an OEM LED light that fits perfectly. The lenses stick out a little (kinda like a Ferrari), but they also have turn indicators on the side of the lens, so I like the look. Let's see who can tell us what they came off of?

I connected them up to my Optima and they are extremely bright.

06+ Euro spec Lotus elise outer, and US inner.

I like them for the sole fact that they have no mounting hardware visable from the outside... I personally would sink them flush to the body, but that's just me.

However what scares me is the cost... Looks like about $400 for the setup (from a web search, please correct me if I'm wrong as that may be per side) Also I read conflicting reports... someone said that there may need to be a balast module.. but I don't see the need for just an LED setup.

Agreed, recess them. They look a bit bulky for me.

How much do they 'protrude' into the tail section. I mean, how deep are they on the inner side of the body? The original supplied Hellas are like 4.5" right?
