Talking Custom Rear Hatch & Intake Plenum--Ready to Take Orders!

I know it's been a long wait, but we are finally ready to accept orders for these custom GTM pieces! Here are the links to the original discussions about these products, which will most likely answer many of your questions and provide additional pics:

Hatch:
Hatch Glass Replacement
Plenum:
Pics of Intake Plenum For Custom Hatch Glass Replacement!

Here are some pics of the new CF hatch piece that is going on JimO's GTM:

The cut-outs in the bottom surface of the hatch will not be there on new ordered units. I cut those in to mate with the custom intake plenum, and I realize that not everyone who wants the hatch will also want the intake plenum, so you can cut whatever size cut-outs you require for your application. I have documented the cut-out location and size for those who want to use the intake plenum.

The CF piece, believe it or not, weighs in at a grand total of 6.5 pounds!!! It is truly a beautiful peice, and fits the hatch opening just like it should, with no grinding/trimming required. No double hump. No grinding away at the body. The part bonds directly to the FFR hatch frame, just like the glass would.

Price of the Hatch is $2500 in fiberglass/gelcoat and $3000 in CF. This will include the Hatch, Lexan "louvers", and bezels for the intake openings (not shown).

Price for the custom Intake Plenum will be $495 and will include the plastic plenum, aluminum panels, two K&N air filters (as shown) and bellows to connect the plenum to the MAF inlet. Please post or PM me if interested and I can take your order. Thanks!

Well...it will be a while before you see one of these hatches painted, as this one that I'm working on is all CF and will remain so. Just got back from the paint shop though, and it sounds like they will have the body sprayed this weekend.

Please don't ask to see pics, as (unless JimO tells me to) I don't think I'm going to let any pics out until the car is done, as I think this may be my favorite paint scheme yet (Thanks, Jim!) and seeing it before it's completely finished will just not be right!

Maybe I am mistaken, but I don't think there is any black paint on this car.

Blast from the (not so distant) past...

Shane,

How difficult would it be to fabricate your intake in Carbon Fiber or some other composite material with good heat resistant characteristics? The more I research a cold air intake (CAI) solution for my future GTM build, the more I keep coming back to your beautiful intake. The only thing that concerns me about your design is heat soak of the CAI box due to the aluminum pieces.

Maybe JimO can chime in here and let us know how it's holding up after all of the miles and track days that he's put on the car. My guess is that if it hasn't melted down by now, I don't know why it would any time in the future.....

Or are you talking about the intake air heating up because of the alum on the top surface? With fresh air constantly being pulled thru the plenum, and the alum all being on the top surface, blocked from being directly heated by anything but the air in the engine bay (which is very close to ambient with the hatch louvers, NACA ducts and diffuser venting on that car) I guess I just don't see any concerns there either.

That is partially what I was talking about. I definitely follow your logic about how the intake air should pick up little, if any heat from the aluminum pieces getting hot in the engine bay. However, the aluminum pieces will absorb more heat than composite materials would and will still contribute to overall engine bay temps. One of the goals for my build is to do everything I can to help keep engine bay temps as low as possible (I also plan to get your side ducts and diffuser louvers among other cooling mods to help reach this goal).

But I also understand it is quite possible that the louvers will provide more than enough flow to keep the engine bay cool enough and the aluminum parts of the CAI won't make a significant difference in engine bay temps, at least while the car is moving. I am just trying to think of anything else that can be done to help keep things as cool as possible, hence the question about the aluminum pieces on your CAI design. Also, if you think about it, pretty much all OEM car intakes use composite materials to minimize engine bay heat which is also what got me thinking about this as well.

Jmciver,

All parts are fine. The only time our engine bay gets warm is when the car is shut down. Even then, the highest engine bay air temps (have a gauge) I've seen is 120 degrees. When driving, it's about 10 over ambient. I wouldn't be concerned at all with cooking the plastic plenum or the hatch itself. Love the solution-- sexy and functional. Rear vision is fine too.

Regards,

Jim

Jim,

Thanks for the response and that is very good to hear.

Out of curiosity, do you use other items (besides the louvers) to help keep the engine and engine bay cool? I am considering using a C5 all aluminum radiator (dual pass if I can find one that will fit easily) and use Redline Water Wetter additive to the coolant. Both of these items made a difference on my E36 BMW M3 track car and the Water Wetter mad a significant difference in my daily driven Supercharged E46 M3.

Jmciver,

We were worried about the engine/ engine bay temps, but it just hasn't been an issue. We haven't driven it hard on the track, but the rad and cooling have done their jobs. Haven't seen coolant temps much over 210 or oil temps over 185. Pretty sure our engine and tranny coolers are effective, plus all the air flow we've got working.

Regards,

Jim

Jim,

One more question about visibility. With that wing on your car, does it completely clear the top of the rear window (i.e. you don't see the wing at all in your rear view mirror)? If so, what is the hight of your wing (I know you can get different height brackets for it)?

Talking View

The rear view of this configuration is unobstructed below the AFR wing. You will be able to see if anything is flashing back there. GTM 147 has had the rear wheel wells flared to accomodate the 345/30ZR/19's so the the side mirrors are only good to see if the gas caps are secure. If the vehicles behind you don't have flashing lights, don't worry you have already passed them anyway.

Thanks for the input guys. I still can't decide if I like the high or the low wing with that hatch replacement piece. Hopefully I will get a chance to see what it looks like with a low wing before I make my final decision.
