In any case, what I'm getting at, even though your comment wasn't directed at me, is that, for the right price, I'd consider putting something like this into my garage...
That thing looks like it fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. It would make me cringe every time I entered the shop.....nope, couldn't do it.....even at half the price.

Funny thing this thread came back up. I decided 2 weeks ago that I don't like the hatch/glass fit to the car. I don't like the limited access to the engine compartment, even with the hatch removed. So I am about half done making it a tilt forward rear. Like the Ferrari, it should tilt forward (more than 90 degrees from vertical). The only part of the rear that ''stays'' is the diffuser. I found a perfect set of hinges from a German car that will do the job. I will make a new trans sub frame to secure the diffuser and mount the striker bolts for a double bear claw set of latches. When finished, I will be able to open the new rear hatch and walk around the engine/trans with no obstructions except for the diffuser. That said, I should be able to remove the diffuser, x-brace, and trans sub-frame, then remove the engine/trans as a single package in less than an hour. I will get some picks up in a few days. This is not an easy mod to do, as it is more than cutting the rear off and bolting on a set of hinges. I'm doing this because I have the time, and someone said that I couldn't, Plus it will be unique. I estimate about 120 hrs total and it will be done before Christmas.

Ya Crash, that was directed toward Iron man.

Now Crash, As for that car you posted, what are you thinking man???? My guess is, when you were single, you were not very selective on anything "you drove". Guess if it gets your rocks off who am I to judge. Even ugly (insert word) need love too.

Ugly tree, hitting every branch on the way down, that was the funniest post I have read in awhile. Thank god my prostate is in good shape.

Thomas#142 glad you jumped in, I was waiting to see when you would tell the world your plans.

Ha...I knew someone had to think it was possible. I would prefer the front tilt like you are doing but thought there was less of a chance that would be done.

Please photos....

Nice Crash...I was thinking about something like that also but I live in California and car jacking is still a possibility so sadly I can't keep it that open.

Still researching an ejection seat....anyone doing that yet.

GT40....more show than go.... um....

Well, I was just messing with you guys. No convertible here. I just thought it was a funny picture, and I too can not believe what a difference the roof section makes to the looks of the car.

I just happened to have the roof section off for easy access to some areas I am glassing in and had taken a pic of the car without the roof on.

Without the roof, I would NEVER think the GTM had nice lines.

Had to get the roof back on quick or I didn't even want to look at the car! It's back to "normal" at this point, and I can look at her again.

Thomas#142...you know the rules!

i was referring to the rear-hinged tilt rear with regards to maintenance access.
or, did you think i was saying one of the most successful racecars of all time was "more show than go"?

I was thinking you meant the Superformance GT40. It is a term "more show than go" you often hear about kit cars from hot rod builders. Meant no disrespect. Many car enthusiasts have never heard of the GTM or Superformance or many of the kit car manufacturers.

Wow

Outstanding. Please keep us informed. I think this will look fantastic when done. Give it an extra strong locking set up so you don't have a hi speed opening disaster Great job.

My dream is dead now. I lost my job of 10 yrs and got another one at 30% pay cut. Pays all the bills but no more dream cars or helping out others right now. Great part is I am 10 mins from home and on days so I found out I have a wife and two kids. They are starting to adjust LOL.
All the best,
Chris

Thomas#142-
First of all, great work. Looks OEM exotic.

1. Tell us your thought process with regards to including the entire rear bodywork, minus the diffuser, in the mobile portion...vs something that leaves the rear panel intact (ie with regards to exhaust exit, etc.)
2. How much reinforcement of the fiberglass has this required? Will you need any steel tubing to reinforce the body as it is lifted?
3. Are you going with the FFR rear glass, or something else?

The hinges come from a early 2000 Audi A4 trunk. It has ( I believe) the correct ''swing'' to make the rear, clear the body. It is a very stiff and robust hinge with no slop. I have to cut off the original hinge mounts and weld/make new ones. The hinges when closed, will not ''pick up''. With them mounted/bolted under the front edge, plus 4 locating pins, and 2 bear claw latches in the rear, a hi speed opening is unlikely. Still not sure if I should make a FULL tilt or cut it at the rear clip like the Ferrari. Pros and cons both ways. There is a 90 deg edge that is about 7/16'' thick on both sides of the body cut. It keeps the shape. Most of the side to side connection between the hinges is under the black out edge of the glass. I think a second FG structure ( like under the hood ) that acts as a ''torque tube'' will connect the hinges and run under the front of the glass. This should be strong enough as long as it has the right shape. The hinges will be mounted/ bolted to the second structure. All reinforcement and bonding is/will be done using FG cloth with the proper fiber orientation ( for the torque tube) and epoxy resin. Beeman, I hadn't thought of using different glass. Funny thing, After all the work that I did on my wing so that it would lock the hatch to the fenders, will be just a simple bolt on.

Sorry to take so long on posting some pics. because of the exhaust and my eng/trans oil cooler boxes, cutting the rear of the body and doing the "F50" tilt rear makes better sense. I made a new rear sub-frame to hold the diffuser and lower body. I used 2002 VW Passat trunk hinges with factory helper struts and the rear hatch is neutral in weight without the glass and my wing. I plan to add an extra pair of 13"/24" struts deal with the extra weight. The black fiber glass part that the hinges bolt to is from a custom mold that I made, and is bonded to the hatch with panel bonding adhesive. It spreads the load of the hinges over a large area and acts as a torque tube between them. I need to Bed in the rear window, install locks, make locator pins and sockets and the list goes on.

Tom,

Great idea, great execution. Sure will make working on the engine easier! You are a damned wizard with fiberglass!

FYI, just last weekend I bonded on your CF side scoops. They look great. I ended up leaving them whole - couldn't bear to cut them down like I had originally planned. I'll send some pictures later this week.

Another option is to keep the rear fascia in place and hinge over it like the Falcon does.

Tom,

How did you form the edges along your cut?
What reinforcing did you add and where?
I like what you have done.

It's an electric rear latch popper and a roller/rail system to help control and guide the lift. I'll get some pics up soon.

Tom,
Looks great!
What are your plans for all of that "baggage space" behind the rear wheels?

Before cutting the body in half it is a must to make a support structure on both sides of the cut. After you cut and remove the body, the support structure will keep the original pre cut shape. Temp up a dam board on the edge of the cut @ 90 deg. Lay F/G to get a 1/4''+ thick 90deg edge. I used epoxy and 8oz cloth for all. Reinforced areas are 90deg, 1/4+ thick edges on all cuts, extend body under the rear window, and bond in the F/G hinge mount structure. The hinge M S is a half shell, and when bonded to the body, act as a torque tube and controls twist very well.
The space behind the rear wheels is boxed in to make a place for eng/trans coolers with a hidden 8'' fan under. The fan(s) exhaust will exit outside of the engine bay. It could be a small storage area with hinged lid and gasket.
Tom.

Thanks Thomas.
I am still in two minds about taking this task on. Do get the car finished or do I delay that for another 6 months by taking this on.

You really think it would delay you that much?
What do you hope to achieve with a tilt rear (for me, it's storage behind the rear wheels) ?
