Howdy Everybody,

6-29-12 update.

I finally finished all the firewall and the panels in the bellhousing area so I decided it was time to install the engine and transmission.

I finally got the engine and transmission in place.

Took about an hour from start to finish which isn't too bad considering I did everything myself. *It took a little longer because I decided to double check the bellhousing bolts before I dropped everything into place.

There are a couple of unfinished Spyders sitting around. #34 just sold a week or so ago so maybe there's another one being built.

I know Rob, aka spydergt100, is almost done with his. Whitby Motors did some of the work on it, but I'm not sure how much. It's a great looking Spyder.

I'm working on the engine wiring harness on mine now.

Update 8-6-12

I've been working on my passenger side footbox. I need to finish the footbox so I can mount my ECU, which is going to be mount on the top inside of the panel on my footbox.

The walls are 1" thick and I've filled them with woven ceramic insulation.

Here's a crappy "semi-finished" pic.

After sealed up the walls I glued a 1/8" thick rubber pad to the inside wall with contact cement for a little more insulation, noise and vibration reduction.

After I have finished the walls I'm going to cover them with black vinyl from Hancock Fabric.

Heater

Howdy Everybody,

Update 8-7-12

I've been working on my heater and boy is it hard to do when it's 110' outside!

I have a Vintage Air unit that consist of a small heater core and a two-speed blower motor in a single unit.

Here's a few pics....

I took the unit apart and modified the heater core housing so the blower inlet side was flush and I could mount it against the firewall panel above the passenger side footbox.

Then I cut a hole in the panel that was the same size as the blower opening.

Next I marked and drilled bolt holes through the panel so I could reassemble the unit with the heater core on the inside of the panel and the blower on the engine compartment side.

I used 10-32 button head screws to reassemble the unit.

Next I will build a plenum on the outlet side of the heater core to direct the heated air to the driver's and passenger's footboxes. I will use a spring loaded door to close off the airflow to either or both footboxes.

Plus the blower can be used to bring cool, fresh air into the footboxes during warm weather.

Also included in pics is my fuse/relay box. It's from a 2000 Crown Vic and has 18 circuits and 4 relays for the fuel injectors, ECU, fuel pump and ?

I'm probably going overboard on the passenger side but my wife will not ride in it if her feet are hot. Not that she'll ride in it much anyway because it'll mess up her hair.

Plus it will be loud. Very loud.

I'm not going to do as much on the driver side. Mainly just a heat shield.

Howdy Everybody,

Boy! I need to update my thread do here goes one that I wrote but never posted.

8-8-12 update.

I've been working on my passenger's side footbox, heater and wiring.

I also drilled and tapped holes for the aluminum hold down clamps for the front brake lines.

Plus I mounted the Spal dual fan controllers and roughed in the wiring harness for them which also contains the wiring for the headlights, driving lights, and turn signals.

Also installed the driveshaft. I need to torque down the bolts

Sorry, no pics.

Paul

P.S. More to follow!

More updates.

Howdy Everybody,

Time for a new update.......

10-28-12 update.

A lot has happened since my last update.

8-26-12 update.

I fabed up mounts for the parking brake, ran the cables, etc. and it actually works, sort of. I ended up modifying the arm where the cables attach so it was aligned better with the lever.

Update

Howdy Everybody,

9-10-12 update.

I installed the fuel injectors, fuel Y-block, pressure regulator, fuel filter and the fuel limes from the fuel pump to the fuel rails. I used Earl's hoses and fittings.

The fuel pump is an Edelbrock Quiet-Flo 80GPH unit and Aeromotive filters.

I used a 1/2 rubber fuel line from to connect the tank ( a '87-'93 'Stang tank w/an external fuel pump adaptor ) to the prepump filter and then to the fuel pump.

I also need to make simple mount to hold my fuel filter.

Sorry, no pics.

First start!

Howdy Everybody,

10-28-12 update.

I have spent weeks modifying the engine's wiring harness to work with a EEC-V computer and I'm finally there, sort of.

I was planning on using MSD LS1 style coils for a coil near plug setup but after many hours of building brackets to mount the coils, and trying to get them to work I have given up on that idea.

I switched to a Ford coil pack from a 5.0 Explorer.

I had to add a 36-1 crank trigger wheel and sensor.

Here's a "first start" video.

Nothing fancy, mainly just checking to see if my engineering "guesses" was right.

It's running very rich and I need to tune it with my laptop.

Howdy Everybody,

OMG!! I cannot believe I haven't updated my build thread in over 3 months so here goes a few updates.........

11-26-12 update:

I pulled the transmission.

I'm using a Weber hydralic throw out bearing and the hose was leaking and one of the freeze plugs inside the bellhousing flange has a cold water leak ( only leaks when the engine is cold ) so I decide to pull the trans to replace the hose and freeze plug.

Sorry, no pic.

Howdy Everybody,
1-12-13 update:
I reinstalled my transmission in my Spyder on Saturday. My hydraulic throwout bearing's pressure hose was leaking so I had to pull the trans to replace it and I finally got it reinstalled.

I also had to replace the freeze plug by the driver's side engine mount because it was leaking.

1-14-13 update:

Next I modified the E-brake setup.......

Before pic.........

The equalizer bar was hitting the base of the e-brake so I had to lower the sheeves so the e-bar would not hit the base. Plus I shortened the cables a little.
After pic........
It works better now.

Paul

Howdy,

1-25-13 update:

I finished fab'ing up my alternator bracket and mounting the alternator.

Nothing fancy, just practical and functional.

Howdy,

2-09-13 update:

I worked on the aluminum panels for the radiator ducting for my Spyder

Fun, fun, fun.

I pulled and reinstalled the radiator a dozen times during this process.

The rear duct and the U-shaped pieces were the only two pieces of aluminum that I did not have to make.

Now it's time to start on the rest of the duct work.

Howdy Everybody,

2-15-13 update:

I kinda sorta finished the driver's side of the duct and I riveted the driver's side of the U-shaped piece to the frame tubes.

Hopefully I will finish the passenger's side today after work.

Then it's back to the engine's wiring harness.

Paul

2-16-13 update

Howdy Everybody,

2-16-13 update:

I more or less finished my radiator ducting.

I had to modify the rear panel so my upper radiator tube would fit.

I slit a small piece of vacuum tubing and glued it around the cutout for a "finished" look.

Another 2-16-13 update

Howdy Everybody,

2-16-13 update:

I actually did this one the 13th.

I completed the mounting bracket for the coolant tank.

I need to space the bracket away from the head so I took a piece of 1" aluminum bar stock center drilled it and the polished the bar and cut them to the proper lenght.

Howdy Everybody,

2-16-13 update:

I actually did this on Feb. 6-7.

I permanently mounted the coil packs to the firewall.

On an Explorer 5.0 the coil packs are mounted on the water pump/timing chain cover and intake manifold but I didn't want them mounted there.

I'm running a Meziere electric water pump and a distributorless ignition and I decided to mount the two coil packs on the firewall so they are out of the way.

Now I need to finish the wiring harness to the coil packs and find a set of plug wires that will be the right lenght.

Paul, looking great! Are you planning to put some rubber moulding around the intake aluminum? I had to on mine, as it started to rub against the underside of the hood. How is your clearance?

The solid radiator tube is impressive!

I'd recommend hiding the coolant tank somehow with something shiny, even if it is just a metal housing around the bottle. A nice swirl pattern would break up a large flat surface visually.

Howdy Richard,

I'm going to add the bulb seal gasket around the ducting but I'm going to wait until I reinstall the nose so I'll know if I need to modify any of the panels.

The coolant tank isn't in the best location visibly but I placed it there for functional reasons, mainly it had to be the highest point in the cooling system. A polished stainless would help. Thanks for the idea!

Wiring harness

Howdy Everybody,

2-20-13 update:

I worked my the engine's wiring harness.

I made a .835" tall standoff out of a piece of 1/2" stainless steel round stock that I centered drilled 17/64" and polished on a lathe.

I felt that I bolted the wire looms directly to the valve covers the wires would be too close to the headers so I made the standoffs to move them away from the headers.

I also finished the wiring for the coils. Sorry, no pic.

Now I need a set of plug wires.

Paul

ECU and wiring

Howdy Everybody,

2-21-13 update:

Today I mounted the ECU.
Mount

In the car.

I mounted the ECU on the top underside of the passenger's side footbox.

I slowly "taming" the wiring harness.

I decided that I needed to remove the heater assembly before I could mount the ECU.

Before I reinstall the heater assembly I will make a duct work so I can supply heated air to both footboxes and maybe the driver's side of the windshield for a defogger/defroster. This is a project for another day.

Paul,

Insulated mats are definitely necessary for the footboxes near those headers. Are you planning to have them Jet-Hot coated or wrapped?

Are you planning to use that window defroster motor to supply air to the footboxes? It works very well. Without a top, the defroster motor is quite worthless otherwise.

Howdy Richard,

I have another set of headers that are Jet Coated but I'm using an uncoated set for now. Once I'm finished with beating, banging and hammering on stuff I'm going to install them.

Yeah, I think a defroster vent will be about useless too. Heck, I'm not sure if I'm going to add wipers. I guess I need to check with DMV. We do not have a vehicle inspection in Arkansas so I'm not 100% sure if I will have to have my Spyder inspected before I can get it tagged.

I have the passenger's side footbox insulated with Fiberfrax insulation and a stainless steel heat shield so it's very well insulated. I haven't done it to the driver's side but it's on my "list".

In Virginia, I needed a powered wiper, not a hand powered one (like on a boat), that was operated by a switch to pass inspection.

I used a wiper mounted with a c-clamp and wooden blocks using alligator clips to the battery. Nothing stated that it needs to be permanently mounted. Enough to pass inspections!

Howdy Richard,

If I use a wiper I'm going to use a single blade and will use a compact unit from the tailgate of a SUV or a mini-van.

I can always remove the wiper blade assembly and install a polished stainless steel cap over the wiper shaft.

I have to work over 4 hours today and 8 hours OT on Saturday so I'll be back at work on my Spyder Sunday, or maybe Saturday after work IF my wife OKs it.

Tamin' the harness

Howdy Everybody,

2-26-13 update:

I'm sloooooowly taming the engine's wiring harness.

Before:

After:

I still have a ways to go but I'm slowly getting there.

Since everything under the dash will be hidden from view once the dash is installed I'm really not too concerned about how it looks.

Howdy Everybody,

3-4-13 update:

I ran the wiring for the rear half of the Spyder over the weekend. I used 14 color coded 16ga wires that I placed inside 3/4" expandable braided sleeving and run it between the trunk framework and the gas tank, up inside the trans tunnel on the driver's side, through the firewall and into the passenger compartment. Theses wires are for the taillights, reverse light, license plate lights and clearance lights. I also used a wire to connect the fuel level sending unit and another one for control power to the fuel pump relay with a couple of extra wires for other things.

Sorry, no pic.

Next I'm building a housing for the switches that will control the headlights, turn signals, parking lights, electric fan, etc.

Once again it's nothing fancy, just functional.

For switches I'm going to use an ALLEN-BRADLEY #800FM-SM22 for 2-position and the SM33 switch for 3-positions like this one.......
