Completed truck mods

Howdy Everybody!

9-4-11

I finished the trunk area frame mods today.

These mods will allow my Spyder to have a usable trunk that will be sealed from road dirt and dust plus it will help to support the rear section of the body.

Reassemble time.

Howdy Everybody!

9-5-11

Since I finished the truck area *frame mods I decided to reinstall the IRS and the rear suspension. *

The shock mount on the LCA had been relocated and I had to repaint the arm with Dupli-color black caliper paint.*

I also decided that the Allen head bolts that were used to attach the caliper adapter to the IRS knuckle are too short as are the ones that attach the calipers to the mount. *They are 12mm-1.25x25mm and they need to be 35mm long for the caliper and 50mm for the adapter. *

Sorry, no pics. **

Here's a few of the progress today.............

Tomorrow I'll start on running the brake and fuel lines. *

Simple body buck

Howdy Everybody,

9-7-11

I made a simple body buck so I could move the cab part of the body outside. I will use the buck while I finish the fiberglass repairs and the rough body work like removing all the mold seams.

It's nothing fancy and I need to do a little more work to it before it's finished.

Howdy Everybody,

9-11-11

Time to move forward.

Saturday I pulled the transmission and bellhousing out of the Spyder without any problems once I decided it had to come out through the top of the trans tunnel.

Next I pulled the steering shaft assembly and the gas pedal assembly.

Next I unbolted the steering rack.
This was done so I could remove the custom Spyder Exhaust system.

Before pics..............

After pics.............

I'm so glad to see this car being finished, Greg had some cool ideas but never any time. I'll keep watching. This car will definitely not be finished as per manual.

I understand about not having the time to work on the Spyder. I get up 1 1/2 hours earlier most mornings so I have the time to do a little work in the car.

I've been using the manual as a mild suggestion on what and how to do things.

Howdy Everybody,

9-19-11

I went to Dallas for the weekend do I did not get anything done until today.

I removed the nose so I could finish sanding and painting the frame. There were a couple of areas that had a considerable amount of rust and after using a sanding disc on my 4 1/2" grinder, a wire brush, file and scothbrit was able to remove the rust and some of the weld splatter.

Here's a fee pics.

The nose mounts are very rusty and after using my sanding disc I decided the only way to remove the rust was with a sand or abrasive blaster. *

Unfortunately I do not have either. *There is a cabinet type abrasive blaster at work so I'll take the parts to work and blast 'em at break time. *

*Before.......

Will post after pics later after they are painted. *

Howdy Everybody,

Here's an after pic of the nose mount bracket.

It turned out pretty good. Since I have everything apart I'm going to do the IFS adaptors next.

X2 on what Pat said....

I can also relate to the lack of time... I've had precious little time to work on my GT40 over the last year due to renovations on my old house (still going on) and the purchase of my new house...

I know that Greg will be very happy to see this car finally moving along. Some of his ideas were really good ones (foot-boxes and frame especially)..

For fans for the exhaust - you may want to look into the larger DetMar or Atwood Bilge Blowers (you can find them at a Marine supplies store).. These blowers can focus the blast of air better than you can anything else.

Howdy Everybody,

I've been doing a little welding on the frame and trying to finish up a few things a I found more rust under the old paint and primer.

I have been painting sections of the frame at a time myself with a small HVLP touch up gun and using a med. charcoal metallic paint and after finding the rust this morning I decided that I needed to strip all of the paint off the frame down to bare metal and start all over.

The local powdercoater's oven is too small for my Spyder's frame so I had ruled that out I called him this morning about sandblasting the frame and he suggested that I try a place in Little Rock that has a bigger oven.

I called and he said that he could blast and powdercoat the frame for $400.00. Wow! I was expecting 2-3Xs that amount.

Looks like I need to pull the engine and figure out how to get the frame on my trailer.

Nice looking work Paul - keep the faith.

Who's car did you buy? i never saw it mentioned.
I can't tell if FFR made chassis changes since mine or original/you made them.

One thing I've been considering on my car is to glass some more rivet points on the underside of body for the splash guards/elephant ears.

Mine is the first production kit/last serial number car so I wonder if they made changes as production picked up.

Build Manual for frame #022

Paul,

I have a completed Build Manual that I recreated on my computer during my build. It has color photos, etc showing how I completed my Spyder.

Send me another e-mail address if you would like to use it. I do not want to place it here.

my e-mail is jwoody@texas.net.

Howdy Everybody,

I finally finished gas tank mounting brackets......

I'm sending the frame out to be powder coated next week so I need to finish up my remaining frame mods.

Howdy Everybody,

10-5-11

I pulled the engine and dropped the gas tank out so now I have a bare frame.

I was going to send the frame out for powder coating this week but I've had to or got to, however you want to look at it, work overtime this week so I'm running a little behind on everything.

I do not have any of the aluminum panels that came with the kit and due to the heavily modified frame most would not fit anyway so I have to make new ones. *

I've decided that I cut out and fit the new panels before I have the frame powder coated to prevent the powder coated paint from getting scratched up during the process. *

Paul

Howdy Everybody,

10-9-11

I started cutting the aluminum panels for the Spyder today.

I started in the truck area since I felt the panels in this area would be the easiest to cut since they where basically rectangularly shaped pieces.

I used my variable speed jigsaw and WD-40 as a lube.

**Note to self: Use a shape blade!**

Here's a few pics of my progress.............

First bottom panel.

Woohoo! *I almost have a trunk!

I need to add more 3/4" square tubing to the frame so I will have something to rivet the al panels to. I'm also going to use 1/8"-1"x1" angle as well.

Paul

Howdy Everybody,

10-12-11

I've been cutting out templates for the aluminum panels in my Spyder and here's pictures of my process so far..….……

I'm using 22"x28" posterboard that I bought at WalMart. *They come in a pack of 10 for $2.56 and they would great.*

I use a sharpie to draw the pattern on the posterboard then I cut it out with a razor knife. *Then I tape it in place with masking tape. *

Once I get the passenger side trans tunnel and footbox templates cut out and I'm happy with how they look I will cut them out of aluminum.

Then I will move to the driver' side. *

I also bought a 30" brake at Harbor Freight today. *Now Ivan bend angles on my panels. *

Paul

Making good progress on this project. I'm enjoying your build. Keep posting pictures!

I'm surprised at how different the chassis is on the Spyder, compared to the roadster & coupe. When was the Spyder originally designed? (just trying to timeline it with the MK1 / 2.

Cool build, I think these are sharp looking cars.
And tons of people as "what kind of car that is" when driving a Cobra, I can only imagine how clueless they are driving one of these. My first bet is a Corvette, what else are they mistaken for?

Nice work! Please continue!!!

This is a frankenspyder, and is about as modified as you can get while still technically calling it a spyder. The normal spyder frame is a slightly-modified coupe frame. Heck, the reason he has to make all his own aluminum is because the frame has been tweaked so much none of the original pieces would fit anyway!

Yep. Plus I've had to make additional changes and add other pieces to the frame as well.

I've had to box in the truck area and after I started a cutting the aluminum panels I decided I needed additional tubing to support the panels.

Same thing for the footboxes. While I was cutting out the templates I could not figure out
How to make everything fit together. Then I decoded I needed to add another 1"x1" tube to the footbox and then everything came together.

Also I'm up 1 1/2 hours early working on the Spyder and it's chilly this morning. I either need to work harder to stay warm or get a heater. LOL

Footbox panels

Howdy Everybody,

10-14-11

I cut out the first aluminum panel last night and I fitted it in place this morning.

I still need to tweak it a little and square up the edges some but overall I'm happy with how it turned out.

I traced out the panel based on my template and I made everything a little oversize or undersized so I could get a decent fit since I was cutting out the panel freehanded with a jigsaw. I used a sanding disc on my 4 1/2" grinder and a flat file to finish the edges and to open up the cut outs so they would fit.

Build looks great! How is the exhaust clearance under the hood? Will you be wrapping the headers?

Howdy Richard,

There's plenty ofhood clearance for the headers. Not sure about wrapping them but I will be using heat shields and blowers to keep the heat buildup down to a reasonable level.

I need to add updates to my thread. I've got a lot of work done as far as all the aluminum panels are concerned

I my post and pictures have all been done with my iPhone and the pics look good on my iPhone's screen but when you look at them on a laptopthe pics leave a lot to be desired.

So, I'm going to start using my digital camera for all my pics from now on.
