I went to the autoparts store and told them I wanted a MC for a 1984 Jeep Cherokee 4 cylinder with manual brakes and that the part number should be something like M1896.

The guy went and got something from the back and it looked right but wasn't aluminum (o well). So, I took it home.

Now in the garage I started to wonder if I had gotten the correct part, as the push rod was 5.5" and I could have sworn that people had said that the pushrod with the Jeep MC was too long and needed to be shortened to 5.5". Then there were the stories about not putting the retaining clip in, because then the pushrod won't come back out. I'm looking at what I have and I'm thinking "what retaining clip?".

So, I look at the box and it says 10-1995. Out of curiousity I decided to find out what 10-1995 was supposed to be for. Autozone's website lets you search by part number (However, I bought the MC from O'reiley's), if I search for 10-1995 I get "CARDONE MASTER CYLINDER (BRAKE SYSTEM) for a 1984 JEEP CHEROKEE" and if I search on M1995 it comes back as a "FENCO_REMAN MASTER CYLINDER (BRAKE SYSTEM) for a 1984 JEEP CHEROKEE". The odd thing, is I can't seem to get it to pull up these part number if I tell it to show me parts for a 1984 Jeep Cherokee.

Does anyone know if this MC will work? Or do I specifically need M1896?

Thanks...

Thumbs up

Been there done that... you need to tell them its for a 6 (SIX) cylinder Jeep (1984), Not a 4!

I had to go to a couple places and bought/returned 2 before I got the aluminum one. It's definitely lighter! you'll be able to tell if you've got the aluminum one without opening the box! (after you've received a couple iron ones!)

The part number I used was 10-1896 for the jeep aluminum m/c non power brakes.
